How To Choose A Pickleball Paddle?

April 15, 2024 by Jeena Noven Leave a Comment

Read the following article to find out how to choose a pickleball paddle to improve your performance in the game.

Choosing a perfect paddle has always been my most challenging task as a pickleball player. Do you also face the same difficulty when purchasing pickleball paddles? From my experience of using different types of pickleball paddles, I have listed a few of the most significant factors to consider when investing your money in a pickleball paddle.

Although many pickleball paddle options are available, each has various features that make it ideal for a particular skill level player. If you are looking for a perfect pickleball paddle that can help to improve your overall performance during the match, the following guide can help you in many ways. Read the following factors to choose an ideal paddle according to your requirements and skill rating.

How To Choose A Pickleball Paddle?

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports around the world. Though it resembles badminton, it uses a pickleball paddle instead of a racket. A pickleball paddle plays a significant role in enhancing your performance. Being a professional pickleball player, I have encountered different types of paddles during my matches.

Initially, I struggled to find a perfect pickleball paddle, but from my experiences with different types of paddles, I can now choose the perfect paddle for my games more effortlessly. Hence, to help my fellow players, I have gathered the most significant factors that affect your performance differently.

Factors To Consider When Purchasing A Pickleball Paddle

1. Paddle’s Weight

An equipment’s weight plays a significant role in its performance. A pickleball paddle comes in three weight options: lightweight, medium, and heavy. Considering the paddle’s weight has been my top priority when purchasing a pickleball paddle.

A lightweight paddle ranges under and around 7.3 ounces. Moreover, a medium-weight paddle weighs around 7.3 to 8.4 ounces., while a heavy-weight paddle weighs around 8.5 ounces or above. As a beginner, I bought a medium-weight paddle to practice my shots. Initially, the paddle seemed lightweight, but I could feel its weight on my hand and wrist over time during long matches.

Pickleball Paddle Comparison By Weight

Lightweight paddles win the race against heavy paddles regarding ball control and less stress. A few prominent pros of heavy paddles include additional power and more accessible ball hits because a lightweight paddle requires more spin for hard shots.

I prefer using a lightweight paddle because such paddles are easy to handle and protect you from various arm injuries. Lightweight and medium-weight paddles are ideal for all skill-level players, but a heavy-weight paddle works for a few players. Hence, depending on your skill level, you should prefer a lightweight paddle for additional control.

2. Paddle’s Core Material

A core is a cardboard-like material dipped in resin and is present between the two faces. Pickleball paddles have different types of cores that enhance their performance and increase their durability. Most paddles use a honeycomb core between their two faces because this material is known for its premium quality and durability factor. Honeycomb core is the best material for pickleball paddles.

Besides a honeycomb material, many professional pickleball paddles have a Nomex core, one of the most lightweight yet strong core materials. A Nomex core contains many small honeycombs that significantly increase the core’s surface area to increase rigidity.

Paddle's Core Material

Another prominent core material in pickleball paddles is the polymer core material. Unlike Nomex, a polymer core is a durable and flexible plastic material. This material is key in proving balance, power, and control. A pickleball paddle containing a polymer core is ideal for beginners. A polymer core is one of the most popular core materials in pickleball paddles because of its advanced characteristics.

You might be wondering why the core material is an essential factor. Well, I have the answer to your question. The core material of your equipment is an essential factor to consider because it offers additional power, balance, accuracy, and control. Furthermore, the core material is a great shock and vibration absorption source.

3. Core Thickness

Another essential factor to consider when purchasing a pickleball paddle is the thickness of its core. The thickness of a core is the distance between the two edges or faces. Usually, a thick core is measured around 16 mm, while a thinner core ranges around 11 mm. 13 mm is the medium core thickness of a paddle.

Pickleball Paddle Thickness

A thin core is known for its power, while a thick core provides better control and softens the ball’s impact. Now, the question arises: Which type of core thickness is better? Well, using a thick or a thin core depends on your skill in the game. I use a medium and a thick core paddle because they are ideal for additional control.

4. Surface Materials

Pickleball paddles use different surface materials, but the most common are fiberglass, carbon fiber, and graphite. Fiberglass material is the most flexible and heavy surface material for pickleball paddles. The hitting of a ball on the fiberglass material resembles that of a spring uncoiling.

When a pickleball ball hits the material, it slightly sinks in the paddle and fires off the surface material. Though fiberglass has a heavy weight and is flexible, it can generate much power to enhance performance.

Paddle Surface Material

Compared to fiberglass material, graphite is lightweight and is one of the strongest materials. Different sports equipment use graphite material. Graphite material creates a large sweet spot and generates more power. This material’s structural integrity helps spread the force across the surface material.

In contrast to both materials, carbon fiber is one of the most popular materials. It is well-known for its lightweight and strength. Carbon fiber is a sub-type of graphite material and provides great balance during the game. Fiberglass is known for generating power, while graphite material proved better alignment.

5. Grip Size

The grip size of a paddle is one of the essential factors I consider when buying a paddle because it helps you perform different shots. A small grip permits more wrist movement, allowing players to hit the ball with more spin. In addition, a small grip plays a key role in improving your equipment control. Increasing the movement of your wrist generates more power.

On the contrary, a large grip reduces the stress around your wrist and shoulder. A large grip is ideal for increasing the stability of your paddle. Exceeding the size of your paddle’s grip can result in elbow strain. Hence, you must choose the accurate grip size of your equipment according to your hand size.

If you are under 5 ft 2 inches, your ideal grip size is 4 inches. Players whose height ranges from 5 ft 3 inches to 5 ft 8 inches should use a paddle with a grip size between 4 ⅛ inches to 4 ¼ inches. Furthermore, you should use a grip size of 4 ½ inches if you are 5 feet 9 inches tall or more.

6. Shape

You might have seen good pickleball paddles with different shapes as a pickleball player. The shape of your paddle is interrelated to the sweet spot. The larger surface areas lead to a large sweet spot that increases forgiveness.

Many advanced paddles also contain an edge guard that protects your equipment from ground shots that can damage it. An elongated shape of the paddle is 16.5 inches long and provides more power and spin. If you are looking for a paddle with a large sweet spot, an elongated shape is unsuitable because its width provides a comparatively smaller sweet spot, thus leading to less forgiveness.

Pickleball Paddle Shapes

A widebody-shaped paddle has more width and a shorter length. This paddle type will give you a large sweet spot but less power and spin. Moreover, the classic shapes of the paddles are a perfect blend of elongated and widebody-shaped paddles, which means they have enough length and width, providing maximum power and spin with a large sweet spot.

People Also Ask

How Do I Know What Size Pickleball Paddle I Need?

You can choose an ideal paddle according to your requirements by considering the products specific to your skill level. In other words, the size of a pickleball paddle depends on your level.

What Is The Difference Between A 16mm & 13mm Pickleball Paddle?

As I mentioned earlier, a paddle has two types of cores. A thick core is 16mm in measurement, while a thin core is 11mm in measurement. 13mm is the medium core thickness of a paddle, which is ideal for many players.

How Do You Pick The Best Pickleball Paddle?

Many factors play a significant role in affecting the performance of a pickleball paddle. I have listed some of the most prominent factors in the above guide when investing money in a pickleball paddle.

Should The Pickleball Paddle Be Lighter Or Heavier?

Pickleball paddles come in three weight options. A lightweight paddle is ideal for all players, while a medium-weight paddle can work best for intermediate and professional players. In contrast, a heavy paddle works for only a few people because it is difficult to handle and causes injuries if not held properly.

What Is The Difference Between Thin And Thick Pickleball Paddles?

If you want your equipment to have maximum power, a thinner paddle is perfect. On the other hand, a thicker paddle is ideal for better control and softball impact. I prefer a thick paddle because it enhances your performance to a great extent.

How To Choose A Pickleball Paddle For Beginners?

If you are a beginner, go for midweight paddles, which best suit their gameplay because it offers a perfect blend of control and power. Moreover, they provide less vibration and more accuracy. Graphite paddles are preferred for beginners as they provide less vibration and more accuracy to get a better grip on the game.

What Makes A Good Pickleball Paddle?

A good pickleball paddle combines a sturdy yet lightweight design, offering easy maneuverability and durability. Ideal paddles have a surface that ensures excellent ball control and spin and a comfortable grip that reduces hand fatigue. The best paddles also balance power and control, enhancing both aggressive smashes and precise dinks.

What Is The Best Material For Pickleball Paddle?

The best material for a pickleball paddle depends on the player’s style and level. Graphite paddles offer a great balance of lightness and strength, ideal for control and quick reactions. Composite paddles are preferred for their power and larger sweet spot, making them suitable for aggressive play.

Conclusion

If you are curious about choosing the perfect pickleball paddle, the above guide can solve your problem. Various factors affect the performance of a paddle in the game. The paddle’s weight, grip size, core material, core thickness, and many other characteristics are essential. Read the USAPA guide to explore the details of each factor individually.

Is Pickleball An Olympic Sport?

April 14, 2024 by Jeena Noven Leave a Comment

The following article answers questions like Is pickleball an Olympic sport? If not, then what needs to be done to get it into the Olympics?

Is Pickleball An Olympic Sport?

Pickleball is not an Olympic sport, straight and simple! However, that does not imply that it can not be an Olympic sport. There is plenty of room in the Olympics for newer games. This is the reason why five new games were introduced in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Based on this, you can rest assured that pickleball is bound to enter the Olympics sooner or later.

Pickleball Olympics 2024

It is already a very famous game in the United States; however, that is not enough for a game to be counted in the Olympics. There are certain pickleball rules and set guidelines in this entire procedure. For instance, to hold a women’s Olympic competition for a particular sport, it needs to be played in at least 40 countries across three continents.

On the other hand, for the men’s Olympic competition of sport, it should be played in over 75 countries across four continents. So, you can imagine why pickleball is not yet included in the Olympic games. In any case, there are plenty of sports groups working on it, and soon we will see pickleball in the Olympics, if not in the immediate next Olympics in 2024, then the one after that in 2028.

What Kind Of Sports Pickleball Is It?

What Is Pickleball?

You may have heard that great things have humble beginnings. The same is true for pickleball as well. Pickleball was invented by a couple of men looking for a creative way to engage their kids in their backyard back in 1965. For so many years, this sport remained dormant. But over time, it gained popularity and is now on the verge of being played as an Olympic sport. Who would have thought that this simple game would one day gain so much fame all across the world?

If you haven’t already played pickleball, let me give you a brief description of what this game is like and how it is played. It is basically a combination of tennis, ping pong, and badminton. It may sound a little weird to you right now, but hear me out! The only difference between these games and pickleball is that it is played using paddles instead of rackets. There are also a few differences in their gaming rules.

Pickleball needs at least two teams composed of two players each. These teams compete with each other in a doubles match. To score a point, you will have to throw the perforated pickleball ball past the other team’s player. If the other team misses the ball, you will score a point. The same is the case when you or your teammate miss hitting the ball when it is in your half of the field; your opponent team scores a point.

How Does A Sport Become An Olympic Sport?

As I mentioned earlier in the first half of this article, a sport can only be included in the Olympics if it is played in a prescribed number of countries across set continents. But since it is an important part of our discussion, let me restate what I had originally said. To hold a women’s competition of a particular sport in the Olympics, it needs to be played in at least 45 countries across three continents. Whereas, for men’s Olympic competition a sport, it needs to be played in more than 75 countries across four continents.

Now, let’s imagine a sport that fulfills the above requirements; now what? Can it be included in the Olympics just like that? The answer is no. That is just the beginning of a very lengthy procedure. Apart from the above requirement, there needs to be a separate organization to oversee the operations of that particular sport internationally. If there is already an organization working and overlooking a sport, then you can proceed to the next step; otherwise, one such organization would have to be made first.

Let’s suppose that such an organization exists; now what? So, to move onto the next level, that organization will have to make a written application to the International Olympic Committee, i.e., IOC. This committee performs its procedures and runs its tests to see if the sport is eligible for the Olympics. If a sport passes all these tests, the IOC gives its organization an International Sports Federation Status.

The International Federation Of Pickleball

The International Federation Of Pickleball is the organization we were talking about earlier. This organization looks over the affairs of pickleball internationally, and its only aim is to take pickleball into the Olympics. This organization is headquartered in Arizona and was launched back in 2010. This federation has been working successfully towards the betterment of the future of Pickleball and it is so close to having pickleball recognized as an Olympic game.

It is all owing to their continuous struggle towards the betterment of this game that pickleball has amassed 63 member countries. It is only a matter of time before this organization gathers the remaining 12 members under their umbrella. The day it happens, pickleball will land straight into the Olympics!

Will Pickleball Debut At The Olympics?

Yes, I agree that pickleball has come a long way from what it used to be. But frankly speaking, it still has a long way to go. It is currently just a US game being played in many other parts of the world as well. However, it is not popular enough to be played worldwide just yet. Millions of people don’t even know of this sport.

Yes, I agree that it has decent popularity across the continents, but for it to enter the Olympics, its current popularity is not enough. With the current speed of things, pickleball will be a part of the Olympics in the year 2028 and no sooner than that.

However, there are certain ways this process can be accelerated. For instance, if more seminars and webinars are held, it will spread awareness. Hence, more people will be attracted to this game. Furthermore, holding large-scale pickleball events worldwide would open doors to further population. The results of such tournaments could also be shared on social media platforms to pique the curiosity of the masses and so on.

People Also Ask

Will Pickleball Enter The Olympics Soon?

With the pace of steep popularity pickleball is gaining with every passing day, it is estimated to be in the Olympics by the year 2028. However, that is exactly that, an estimate, and there are ways to boost its popularity much faster. If timely measures are taken, pickleball might make it to the Olympics by the year 2024.

Is Pickleball A Professional Sport?

Yes, pickleball is a professional sport. It may not be as popular as other sports like tennis, cricket, and football, but it is still played at a professional level. It has renowned pickleball players. It is mainly an American game, but it is played in many other countries as well. It is about to enter the Olympics soon in the year 2024 or 2028.

Why Isn’t Pickleball An Olympic Sport?

Pickleball is not yet an Olympic sport because it is not yet that popular. For it to enter the Olympics, this game needs to be played in at least 75 countries across four continents. This threshold has not been achieved yet, which is why it is not an Olympic sport. However, it is expected that if correct and timely measures are taken, we will see pickleball in the Olympics by the year 2024 or 2028.

In How Many Countries Is Pickleball Played?

With the latest addition of Lebanon to the member countries of the International Federation Of Pickleball, the threshold has reached 63 in total. It means that a total of sixty-three countries hold and play pickleball tournaments on a large scale. For a sport to enter the Olympics, it needs to be played in at least seventy-five countries across four continents.

What Sports Are Not In The Olympics?

Pickleball and some other sports are also not included in the Olympics which are Cricket, Polo, Squash, Darts, and Bowling. Baseball and softball were included in pickleball and later removed in 2005 and reversed in 2016.

What Sport Is Similar To Pickleball?

Pickleball has cousin sports, including Ping ball, racquetball, and paddleball. If you love outdoor sports, you can also play padel, ping, and racquetball. Padel combines outdoor and indoor sports and is closely related to tennis.

When Did Pickleball Become An Official Sport?

Pickleball was officially established as a sport in 1972. In 1972, the Pickleball Inc. Corporation was born. In the same year, a pickleball tournament is also arranged with large wooden paddles and whiffle balls.

Final Thoughts

So, if you ask if pickleball is an Olympic sport yet, the answer is no, but will it be in the new future? The answer to this question is a big fat yes. The International Federation Of Pickleball is not the only organization working towards this cause. There are also many other organizations doing their utmost for the betterment of this sport.

With strict regulations and further awareness, not even the IOC’s strict criteria will be able to stop the grand entrance of this popular sport into the Olympics. So, keep your hopes high because we are definitely seeing pickleball in the 2024 or 2028 Olympics!

As well as, these best hard court pickleball shoes are lightweight, which means you can move independently back and forth in multiple directions. Furthermore, there are different sizes and colors available in the stock; you can go for your favorite.

Players complain that they feel pain in their feet if they consistently play for an hour or two. This is because they stand bending their backs ahead. When you are bending ahead, you are applying pressure on the forefoot area. These are the best shoes to protect your Achilles for pickleball.

As a result, your feet start hurting, and regular practice can damage your foot bones. But these shoes come with rearfoot and forefoot GEL technology. The GEL technology absorbs all the pressure and provides a cushioning, refreshing surface.

Plus, the Ortholite Sockliner drinks up all the sweat and does not allow the smell to come out of the shoe. Playing in the rain with pickleball shoes could be irritating. Because wet shoes slow down your activity and cause itching. But these shoes are water resistant. You can play in the rain or on a wet court. It can be a perfect pickleball gift for pickleball lovers.

Pros
  • Excellent Shock Absorption
  • Quality Fabric
  • Provides Maximum Balance
Cons
  • Too Tight And Stiff With No Arch Support
Summary

There are unlimited amusing features of these shoes, but you do not have time to read all of them. Easy to wash, dust resistant, versatile design, and durability are the neglected qualities of ASICS Men’s Gel-Challenger 12. All of these features are evidence that ASICS men’s shoes are lightweight court shoes.
