10 Pickleball Drills To Level Up Your Game

August 30, 2026 by Jeena Noven

Upgrade your performance, fill the gaps, and learn and practice the pickleball drills to be successful in pickleball.

Drills have become extensive in sports, considering the increasing participation of professionals and players in certain training programs, and pickleball is no exception. The pickleball drills let you fill the gap, work on your demerits, and improve your performance on the court without any dependencies. There are many paid courses and training sessions by coaches, institutes, and agencies offering pickleball drills, but I’ll guide you to similar drills for free.

Pickleball Drills

Pickleball is a paddle sport that can be played on indoor and outdoor courts. It can be played by two players as well as four players. Pickleball is played with a paddle, a racket-like compact and perforated hollow handheld product used to hit the ball. The basic theme is to hit the ball to the opponent’s side (either side of the net in the middle of the court).

Pickleball might seem easy, but it needs a lot of practice to become a professional player in pickleball. This is because there are plenty of hidden tricks and serves that a player can perform with the perforated paddle. Therefore, you must practice to fill the gaps and improve your gaming performance. The practice and exercising of certain pickleball training that aims to improve a set of skills is what we call drills.

Pickleball Drills For Beginners

You must have heard the famous saying—Practice makes a man perfect! This is true, but the definition of practice is not to show up on the court and meaninglessly hit the ground, slapping shots. There must be a symmetry, a goal, or a drill to which you must stick.

As a beginner, the first thing you need to do is to find out your strengths and the gap. Strength doesn’t mean something you’re professional at because, as an entry-level player, it wouldn’t be possible. But strength refers to a key style, position, or stroke you’re good at or will learn easily. After addressing both, you can opt for a perfect drill that nourishes your merits and fills the gaps to boost your overall game performance.

Nevertheless, if you’re playing pickleball for entertainment or fun only or are truly dedicated to it, every player wants to perform better on the court and win the game. In this sequence, these are the best pickleball drills for beginners:

1. Know Your Pickleball Paddle

The first thing a beginner needs to do is to learn the equipment in his hands, i.e., pickleball paddle. That’s crucial because a lack of knowledge and understanding about the paddle is one of the common reasons behind the errors made by newbies.

When I started playing pickleball, I found the first drill very easy. Still, with time, I understood that there were multiple errors in my gameplay, mainly because I was not aware of the different components of the pickleball paddle.

Pickleball Paddles, Know Your Pickleball Paddle

The pickleball paddle is like a compact, solid racket that is easy to hold and play with, but its different components offer different shot styles and power. This is because it is important to study the paddle.

First, hold the paddle in your hand and start hitting the ball. What’s your goal here? The aim is not to let the ball hit the ground. Please practice pickleball in a wide space with no breakable or sensitive objects nearby. When you get used to it, move on to a harder step: hitting the ball using different paddle parts.

The pickleball paddle mainly has a head and tail; the head is the area from where you will hit the ball, while the tail is the grippy surface from where the player will hold the paddle. The head of the pickleball paddle has further divisions like sides, top, bottom, and more. After practicing basic hitting, you must practice hitting the ball with different paddle sides.

2. Set The Target

In the next drill, you need to find a wall near you. Please search for a location that is not too compact or has a wall that is not prone to damage. With the help of tape, marker, or anything similar, mark a square box on the ball. When I did this drill, I marked a square box 36 inches above the ground, which worked perfectly. You can adjust the width of the box as per your suitability.

Once you have set up the space or so-called playing area, it’s time to begin the drill. In the first step, you need to set the posture. I stood seven steps from the wall, but you can change that at the start and middle of the practice.

You need to hit the ball with the pickleball paddle to the square you created, and whenever the ball comes back to you, wait for a while so that it bounces once. The goal is to hit the ball as often as possible without a break.

3. Pickleball Dinking Drills

To practice the dink shot, you must first understand what that is. For your information, the dink shot is played near the non-volley area line. It’s the area between the net and the non-volley zone line. The dink shot is, without any doubt, a soft shot, but it is difficult for the player on the opposite side to get this shot. This way, the dink shot helps to increase your score. I always called it a shield shot as it saved my score and performance from worsening.

To practice the dink shots, you need to get your partner along with you to the court. Well, some ways, like bucket balls and other tools, help you practice the dink shots without any partner, but I always find it more fun and interesting with a partner.

Once the setup is ready, you and your pickleball partner must stand on the opposing kitchen lines. To practice the dink shot, you aim to hit the ball to the kitchen area of your opponent without getting any slam shot. Therefore, please try to build the full focus on each serve. Well, that doesn’t mean restricting a single posture; you can try different positions, angles, and distances per your feasibility.

4. Pickleball Volley Drills

You and your partner need to stand on opposing kitchen lines. To practice volleying, you aim not to let the ball hit the ground without getting a slam shot. Therefore, please try to build the maximum focus on each serve. Well, that doesn’t mean restricting a single posture; you can try different positions, angles, and distances per your feasibility. You can play the volleying by both single hand or dual.

5. Grab The Ball

You must practice catching the ball with your paddle in this pickleball drill. It makes no sense to you now, but it is a thing. Well, pickleball is not like baseball or something in which you are grabbing the ball, but you need to deaden the ball being served to you by the opponent. This can be done by allowing the pickleball paddle to hit the ball or serve a shot without demanding force from your side.

6. Pickleball Forehand Drills

The forehand groundstroke is a basic shot a pickleball player can make by directly hitting the ball from the dominant side. If you are a right-handed pickleball player, the forehand shot is the stroke you play when the ball comes to your right side, while it will be shifted to the opposite side for left-handed players. For the forehand groundstroke, I go ahead with the palm of my right hand, as this is preferable.

You need to stand at least 10 feet from the wall and hit the ball so it bounces at a half distance, i.e., 5 feet. You can mark 5 feet on the ground for practice. Simply put, the ball must hit the ground at 5 feet distance after hitting the wall. After practice, I noticed the ball bounced at a good height after hitting high enough. When hitting the ball, please ensure your knees are stepped in with your left foot—if you are a right-handed player and vice versa.

Once you get into the position, start hitting the ball from the height of your chest. Well, I believe in changing the height as this way, I learn better, and it helps me find the perfect posture to improve the game score. In a nutshell, positioning and hitting focus is very important here.

7. Pickleball Backhand Drills

The backhand groundstroke is like the forehand shots, but the only difference is the hitting side. You need to hit the ball from the left side by leading the pickleball paddle with the back of your hand instead of the palm of your hand. Again, when hitting the ball, please ensure that your knees are stepped in with your left foot—if you are a right-handed player. In contrast, if you’re a left-handed player, keep your knees and step in with your right foot.

Pickleball Wall Drills

Practice is the key, and you should not take it for granted; otherwise, your performance will be negatively affected. In these pickleball drills for intermediate players, I highly suggest you not rely on any factors, not even a partner, for solo pickleball drills. Get up for yourself and practice pickleball without any dependent or independent impact factors. In case there are any limitations, fill those in for yourself.

In this section, I’ll explain the pickleball drills to do alone; you can practice anytime without any partner. That might need extra effort and time to set up the space and everything, but that’s for one time only. Once you have set out everything, you can use the pickleball practice board forever for pickleball practice drills. Also, the DIY pickleball setups help people enjoy their me time, reduce weight, and try this energetic and healthy activity without any partner.

Pickleball Wall Drills
Pickleball Practice Board For Pickleball Wall Drills

To practice the wall drill, you need to find a wall near you, of course. The perfect space for the wall drill has a fine and robust wall that is not prone to damage and has a wide surface area. To be honest, pickleball is not a game you play in compact or limited space. There are no restrictions related to the closed or open areas, as you can play pickleball on outdoor and indoor courts.

I found the indoor courts more feasible because there are no bricks in your pathway, like wind pressure, weather changes, etc. You can play freely in your style and focus on the shots rather than the environment. After searching for a location that is not too compact or has a wall that is not prone to damage, you need to mark the field. You can use tape, marker, or anything similar to mark a square box on the ball.

When I did these beginner pickleball drills, I marked a square box with adhesive tape as it is the most convenient of all the available options and is visible clearly. I marked the square box 36 inches above the ground and kept its overall area similar to the area of the net in the typical pickleball or tennis courts. You can adjust the width of the box as per your feasibility.

Pickleball Drills For Two

You can indeed practice drills alone, but sometimes it gets boring, right? Everyone needs company to do fun activities like pickleball. If you already have a partner, that’s great. Here are some drills for two players.

1. Triangle Dink Drill

The triangle dink drill is best for ball placement and shot practice. In these pickleball dinking drills, both players must stand at the NVZ or non-volley zone area. The non-volley zone area is on both sides of the pickleball net, so the players must stand in the opposing position. The theme is to keep the opponent mobile around the premises of the non-volley zone.

In the triangle dink drill, you need to hit the ball in three different spots in a way that they form a triangle together. When you dink at different locations, the opponent will keep moving here and there, and your winning chances will increase as it will be difficult for your opponent to serve the ball.

Well, that’s not as smooth and easy as it sounds. You need to keep an eye on different locations at the same time. But, once you get strong on the triangle dink drill, it will greatly help your pickleball career.

2. Volleying The Ball

In the pickleball court, there are kitchen lines on both sides. You and your partner need to stand on opposing kitchen lines. The main idea of volleying is not letting the ball hit the ground without getting a slam shot. Therefore, please try to build the maximum focus on each pickleball serve. Well, that doesn’t mean restricting a single posture; you can try different positions, angles, and distances per your feasibility.

People Also Ask

What Are Drills In Pickleball?

Pickleball drills refer to certain practices that aim to improve a skill or demerit of a player on the court. Pickleball drills can be performed alongside as well as with an opponent. Volleying, dinking, triangular dinking, and many others are examples.

What 3 Skills Do You Need To Be Successful In Pickleball?

It’s hard to name three skills. Most importantly, dinking, volleying, attaching from the NVZ, and blocking the NVZ can increase your chances of winning pickleball.

What Is The #1 Mistake Beginner Pickleball Players Make?

The number one mistake beginners make is to start playing pickleball without a basic understanding of the game, the components of the paddle, and positioning. I have also tried to cover these aspects in this blog, so don’t forget to read.

How To Build A Pickleball Backboard?

First, choose two plywood sheets 10 feet wide and 6 feet high. Now join the sheet together and screw them so that they should attach by both sides of the joints. Make sure that plywood sheets engage each other at equal lengths. Use Wood Putty to fill the joints of the wall. Your wall is ready to use for practicing pickleball when the wood putty is dry.

How To Practice Pickleball Alone?

To practice pickleball alone, start with wall drills to enhance your shot precision and reflexes. Next, focus on shadow playing, which helps improve your court movement and positioning without using a ball. Finally, spend time on targeted serving practice, aiming for different areas of the service court to develop consistency and accuracy in your serves.

How to Structure a 30-Minute Drills Session

A drills session works better with a clock and a target than with a vague plan to “practice.” Try this split. Ten minutes on one control drill — cross-court dinks or wall volleys — counting your longest error-free streak. Ten minutes on your weakest shot only, at a pace where most attempts succeed; difficulty you cannot handle teaches nothing. Finish with ten minutes of a live, scored drill against a partner, so the skill has to survive pressure — then cool down properly. Write the three numbers down. If they are not improving week to week, change the drill, not the effort.

Conclusion

That’s all for the pickleball drills! Most importantly, you need to work on your posture and improve your focus in the game. The lateral movements, response time, concentration, pickleball ball placement, control, and handling are the factors that improve with practice, so the drills for pickleball were introduced. There is no need to enroll in paid programs and practices; I have explained the best pickleball drills above that you can try easily.

How To Regrip Your Pickleball Paddle?

August 29, 2026 by Jeena Noven

How To Regrip Your Pickleball Paddle?

Here, I have brought you a step-by-step guide to how to regrip your pickleball paddle, which will help you improve your strokes.

Regripping is something that any pickleball should know. You don’t have to rush to any closer pickleball store each time you feel like the grip is pinching or becoming loose, as with a few simple tools, you can do it each time, whenever and wherever you want. I carry these tools in my pickleball bag and can regrip my paddle’s handle whenever I feel like it. The process is not that difficult and takes a few minutes if done with dedication.

Regrip Your Pickleball Paddle

You surely don’t want to keep using a paddle you cannot hold properly. My pickleball paddle usually used to slip out of my hands. This issue persisted with many different paddle brands. A fellow pickleball player suggested using an overgrip to enhance the sweat absorption of my paddle handle. Since then, I have been obsessed with regripping my paddle handle. Here is a step-by-step guide to how to regrip pickleball paddle.

Why Is Regripping Important?

Regripping is not done only while replacing an outworn grip but also becomes necessary if the placement of the player’s hand does not match the handle size. You don’t have to quit using your favorite pickleball paddle just because of the handle; you can overgrip it to increase the handle size as much as you want. All you have to take care of is your overlapping technique.

The more you roll the tapes over each other, the more the circumference increases. The inner shaft of the handle is not made up of comfortable material. You need to have tape that provides a better grip and a much softer feel. This is only possible with good gripping material. If your paddle gripping tape is thin, get an overgrip tape and roll it over the original gripping tape provided by the manufacturers.

If you do not like the over-cushioning results from the over-grip, replace the original one with a new one with better and thicker cushioning on the inner side. For players with a comparatively larger hand size compared to the standard size, over-gripping will provide a perfect circumference for the handle to fit in your hands. Hence, you will have a better pickleball paddle grip size to perform your best.

Paddle Replacement Grip Vs Overgrip

Feature Replacement Grip Overgrip
Primary Purpose To replace the original grip To be wrapped over the existing grip.
Thickness Thicker, as it’s meant to be the main grip Thinner, designed not to add much bulk.
Cushioning Offers more cushioning for comfort and shock absorption. Less cushioning focuses on enhancing grip and feel.
Durability More durable as it’s designed to be a long-term solution. It is less durable and often needs more frequent replacement.
Installation Requires removing the old grip; more involved process. It is easier to apply and can be wrapped over the current grip.
Texture It varies but generally provides a good balance of tackiness and comfort. Often more tacky to ensure a better grip over an existing one.
Feel and Control It can significantly change the paddle’s handle feel and control. Adds minimal change to the feel, maintaining the original grip’s characteristics.
Weight Impact It can affect the paddle’s weight and balance more noticeably. Minimal impact on the paddle’s weight and balance.
Customization Limited customization as it fully replaces the existing grip. Allows for more customization in terms of layering and feel.
Ideal For Players need to renew their paddle’s grip completely. Players are looking for extra grip without major changes to the handle.

Materials Required For Regrip

  • An Overgrip or Regrip
  • Electrical Tape
  • Scissors
  • A Clean Piece Of Cloth

Materials Required For Regrip

Step By Step Guide For Regriping Pickleball Paddle

  1. First, examine your pickleball handle to determine whether it needs an overgrip or a regrip. If the original grip has become quite old and fails to provide the comfort and resistance it used to provide, you need to grab a regrip for it. On the other hand, if fitting and circumference size are an issue, you can go for an overgrip.
  2. Once you have identified which grips you need, the next step is to get the tools and pickleball paddle you need to regrip.
  3. You might need to clean any debris, oil, or moisture off the original regrip as it can affect the adhesive power of the overgrip. In case of a regrip, you don’t have to go through this step; you must remove the original grip before rolling the regrip over the handle.
  4. Now, you must take the overgrip or re-grip and remove the plastic sheet provided for protection. Don’t forget to remove it from the other side, too.
  5. You will notice a small adhesive tape at one end of the grip. This might provide you with the support you need, and you can easily trust the stability of the overgrip. Hold the adhesive, remove the paper, and stick it on the lower end of the paddle. Ensure it is placed in the correct position, as it acts as a starting point and might lead to the rolling over of the overgrip. You must wrap the end cap so the pickleball paddle grip tape overlaps it.
  6. Now, you must pull the overgrip with one hand and twist the paddle so the overgrip rolls over the handle correctly. Ensure that the angle and the speed remain the same as you move toward the throat. If you change the angle, the overlapping will not be the same. This will lead to uneven circumference.
  7. When you have reached the upper end of the handle, pick your scissors and the extra length evenly. Make sure not to cut the pickleball grip tape shorter than required.
  8. The last but most important step is securing the grip tape with electrical tape. Roll over the end of the grip tape for pickleball paddles so that one end of the electrical tape comes over it. The other end of the electrical tape should come over the throat of the paddle. Cut the electrical tape.
  9. Now, you can enjoy a better grip on your pickleball handle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Use A Tennis Overgrip On A Pickleball Paddle?

Yes, you can, but you might have some extra overgrip length. You will have to cut it off. This extra length can be used next time while regripping the handle. Both have plastic material and comfortable material used. The extra length of the tennis overgrip can be comparatively difficult to handle while rolling over the pickleball handle.

How To Fix A Broken Pickleball Paddle Handle?

Fixing a broken paddle handle is very challenging as by doing that, you can only extend the paddle’s life up to 2 to 3 months. Unfortunately, there is no solution to a broken paddle handle. Buying a new paddle instead of repairing the broken one is advisable.

How To Replace Pickleball Paddle Grip?

To replace the pickleball paddle’s grip, first unwind and remove the old paddle’s grip carefully with the help of a scissor. Now unroll the new grip and start gripping the handle’s butt end tightly. Overlap each turn slightly and secure the end with tape or an adhesive strip. Your paddle is ready to use with the new paddle’s grip.

Five Signs Your Grip Is Already Worn Out

Grips rarely fail suddenly; they fade. The tack that once held the paddle still turns smooth and shiny, so the paddle begins to twist on off-center hits. Sweat that used to absorb now sits on the surface, the edges of the wrap start to lift or fray, and a sour smell lingers no matter how often the handle air-dries. The clearest test is your hand: if you are squeezing harder than you used to just to feel secure, the grip — not your technique — is the problem. Replace it, and clean the handle before the new wrap goes on.

Conclusion

I hope you know how to regrip your pickleball paddle to have a better grip, more cushioning, and better resistance than before. You no longer have to stop making an impactful stroke because of the fear of losing the grip and hitting the opponent on the head. Change any pickleball paddle grip’s circumference to improve your stroke style.

What Is An Erne In Pickleball?

August 29, 2026 by Jeena Noven

Here is all you need to know about what is an Erne in pickleball so that you can take full winning advantage from that shot.

To make a professional win, you must know how to trick all the players during pickleball. There are different shots a player can make to score and gain points in the game. The most important and highly professional shot that expert players make is the Erne, which helps the player to hit the powerful and super volley.

Many people still do not know what an Erne is in Pickleball. In this article, I will tell you what is an Erne in pickleball, what the benefits of using it and how you can make an Erne hit in pickleball. Read the article till the end to know the details regarding Erne in pickleball and also some tips for defending that shot hit by the opposite team player.

What Is An Erne In Pickleball?

What Is An Erne In Pickleball

Erne is one of the famous and legal shots that is carried out by the player outside the non-volley zone. It can be hit from the left or either from the right side, depending upon the respective sideline of the pickleball player. The erne pickleball is usually a close shot made close to the pickleball net, which attacks downwards towards the net and makes sure that it scores a point.

This shot is basically performed when the opposite team player dinks the shot that lands straight toward the crosscourt. This shot is not made inside the court area but rather outside the bounds area of the pickleball court. An Erne is surprisingly an amazing shot that a player can make during a competitive pickleball gaming session. To make this shot you just have to learn the basic rules of it.

Once you make a correct shot, you can win the game easily, even at the very last moment. The tricky thing about this shot is that you need to hit it right on the legs of the opponent’s player, which is impossible to stop, and it goes directly into the net. This erne pickleball shot comes with high speed, which makes it difficult for the other team player to defend it. An Erne shot is considered legal and is being used by many players during the big tournaments of pickleball.

How To Hit An Erne?

Hitting an Erne requires proper knowledge and skills. The pickleball player needs to make up his mind first before he thinks of hitting a shot. Also, the player should look around at the surrounding situation as it is a high-risk shot. If you make a mistake in attempting this shot, then you will be losing a point for sure. Making an Erne perfectly enhances the chance for the team to win the championship.

The player needs to plan first and make the shot accurately at the right time. This shot is quite challenging and the players need a high level of skills to perform it. For hitting this shot you first need to wait for your opponent to pass the right shot so that you can take advantage of it.

Once after getting the ball, you need to move the sideline and jump over the niche side to hit directly toward the net. Making this shot will perfectly surprise the opponent team as they will all remain defenseless. Planning is important, along with the correct time and position. The three basic ways of making a correct Erne in Pickleball are;

  • You need to jump aside from the pickleball kitchen
  • Then, you need to remain on the boundary side
  • Run and stand outside the court area to make a hit

Benefit Of Hitting An Erne

  • Erne is considered the strongest shot as it directly hits the net to score a point. It is considered a downward strike, which tricks the opponent’s player.
  • This shot is also considered threatful to the other team members, which also helps you become dominant over them.
  • The quality and method of your hitting help you conquer the game easily. Making this shot perfectly will help the player to win the game without any doubt. The player needs to practice a lot for making the right pickleball erne shot because you will lose the chance of scoring by making a wrong hit.

Pickleball Erne Vs ATP Shot

The pickleball Erne vs ATP ( around the post ) shot is different. Around the post, the shot requires proper steps through which you can make a good shot. For making ATP shots you need footwork, which is quite important for performing this hit. This shot is critical, and your footwork needs to be perfectly fine to attempt this. To perform ATP you need to bend, make a proper position, and crossover for making a hit.

What Is A Bert In Pickleball?

In pickleball, a “Bert” refers to a specific type of shot where a player jumps over the non-volley zone, also known as the kitchen, to hit a ball in the air. This acrobatic move allows the player to strike the ball closer to the net while still adhering to the rule that prohibits volleying while standing in the kitchen. It’s a dynamic and advanced technique that can surprise opponents and add an aggressive element to the game. It is similar to the Erne shot.

People Also Ask

What Is Erne In Pickleball?

Erne is a famous shot that pickleball players are making to win the game by scoring points.

What Makes An Erne Legal?

When the player goes outside the kitchen zone, then Erne becomes legal for them. You need to go outside the boundary area to hit this shot legally.

Why Is It Called An Erne In Pickleball?

Erne is basically a shot that was made by Perry. He hit this shot in the finals of National (2010), and the referee considered this shot correct and gave points to the team.

When To Hit An Erne In Pickleball?

Pickleball players hit Erne in the air near the kitchen or non-volley zone while jumping or while reestablishing themselves out of bounds through the kitchen. Hitting an erne while standing in the kitchen zone is illegal.

What Is An ATP In Pickleball?

ATP is shot in pickleball, where you hit the pickleball near the top or around the net, commonly called “Around The Post.” To cross the pickleball net while hitting is illegal.

What Is Poaching In Pickleball?

When a pickleball player hits the ball on their partner’s side of the court by crossing the centerline is called poaching in pickleball. Poaching is an aggressive shot that results in speeding up the game. Poaching usually occurs when you are at the kitchen line of the court.

Legal or Fault? It Is Decided by Your Feet

An Erne is legal because of where your feet are, not where your paddle is. You may run around the side of the kitchen, jump from outside the non-volley zone, and volley while airborne — your paddle may reach over the zone. What you cannot do is touch the zone or its line, or let momentum carry you in before the rally ends. Take off and land outside, and the shot stands. If the ball bounces first, you may step in to play it, then recover.

Conclusion

I hope that you have got an idea about what skills and techniques are required for making an Erne in pickleball. Also, you can enhance your skills by practicing this shot again and again. More practice will make you professional in hitting Erne during the pickleball play.

This shot is worth adding to your game because it gives a great impression to the other team. Better tips and tricks will help you gain more command of the shot. I hope that you can make a good Erne shot as you will be motivated enough to make a good shot after reading this article.

How To Measure Your Pickleball Paddle Grip Size?

August 28, 2026 by Jeena Noven

Read an informative article on measuring your Pickleball paddle grip size to get the right fit when playing the game.

Are you struggling to find a good Pickleball paddle for your next tournament? If yes, then you should consider checking the paddle’s grip size. As an entry-level player, you make mistakes in the game, one of which can be investing in the wrong paddle. The size of the paddle is extremely important when it comes to performance. It not only helps in making two-handed shots but improves your overall game.

As a newbie, I took a few months to figure out the right paddle-size grip that helped me engage actively. Some tests can be used to measure the size so you can find a good fit. By reaching the end, you can find a good paddle with the right grip size so you don’t feel fatigued when striking the pickleball ball on the court.

How To Measure Your Pickleball Paddle Grip Size?

The grip of the Pickleball paddle is as important as the size of your shoes. When on the court, you need to have a good grip on the paddle to make shots. People tend to ignore their paddle’s grip unless they lose points because of it. Regarding size, Pickleball paddles have strict parameters that should be followed. The standard pickleball paddle is 16 inches long and 8 inches wide overall, and the grip is only the handle portion of that length.

The handle’s grip and size play an important role in your performance. Experts who play Pickleball professionally suggest a grip circumference range of about 4 to 4.5 inches. If you are a newbie who seems to develop an interest in the game, use the following tests to measure the paddle grip size. These consider the texture and the circumference of the paddle, which are important.

1. Ruler Test

The first and the most common test used for measuring the Pickleball paddle size grip is the ruler test. This is quite simple and easy, just like its name. You need to grab a ruler or a measuring tape with exact measurements. Use your dominant hand and extend all the fingers. They should be close together with each other.

You will notice that your hand has two prominent creases right in the center of the palm. Place the ruler or the measuring tape on the crease and note the distance to the top of your ring finger. The distance from the crease to the ring finger should equal the paddle grip size. Please ensure the ruler is aligned with the bottom lateral crease for accurate measurements.

As mentioned, the range for the pickleball grip size is about 4 inches to 4.5 inches. When performing the ruler test, you notice that most measurements lie between this range. Every player has a different hand, but the range is the same for everyone. I was surprised that all my fellow players on the court had a grip size between 4 and 4.5 inches.

2. Index Finger Test

One of the favorite ways to measure the Pickleball paddle grip size is to use the index finger test. It is also called the Eastern Grip. You can hold the paddle with your dominant hand using the eastern grip. This is when your heel pad and index knuckle rest on the third angle, and the palm is placed on the same level. You can use a Pickleball paddle or a tennis racquet with all the dimensions mentioned.

Please make sure to use the paddle with a standard size that is not modified. Place the other hand’s index finger on the paddle’s handle. The gap between the fingers and the palm will be filled. Now is the time to measure the paddle grip size. If you notice no space for your index finger, the paddle is too small for you.

On the other hand, if there is too much space left even after placing your index finger, the paddle is too big for use. Hence, look for a paddle that fits your index finger well and leaves only a small space. Using small or big grip sizes can tire you during the game and cause problems like tennis elbow.

How To Increase Grip Size On Pickleball Paddles?

Having a correct grip circumference is extremely important for Pickleball paddle grip size. It can be as effective as selecting the right pickleball shoes for your game. Every player on the court has a different preference when it comes to grip. Players using the smaller grip want more control through increased wrist movement.

Players using larger pickleball paddle grips prefer stability and less stress on the elbow and the wrist. There can be a chance that your grip size is smaller, but you want a bigger one. This can easily be fixed using an overgrip, which adds about 1/16th of an inch to the circumference. It increases the size and provides more stability. Hence, you can increase the grip size of the paddle but cannot reduce it if it has a bigger size.

Why Does Grip Size Matter?

Pickleball paddle grip size is an essential factor when choosing a paddle. It affects the player’s performance, control over the paddle, and comfort. A grip size suitable for your hands offers better control and also reduces injuries such as tennis elbow.

A small paddle’s grip can cause wrist tension due to holding the paddle with too much power. For beginner players, a flexible and balanced paddle grip is essential. In contrast, professional and advanced-level players prefer an oversized grip, which offers more stability and is good for defensive shots like Lobs or dinks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Choose A Pickleball Paddle Grip?

Using the Index finger or ruler test, you can choose a Pickleball paddle grip. These will help you find the right size before buying a paddle.

Does Pickleball Paddle Size Matter?

Yes, a Pickleball paddle size matters because it impacts your performance. A big paddle might slip off your hands, while a small one applies more pressure on the wrist.

What Size Paddle Should I Use?

The paddle can be selected according to height and weight but should not exceed 24 inches. This is the standard size used by most Pickleball players around the world.

How To Increase Grip Size On Pickleball Paddle?

If the standard grip size on a paddle is still too small for you, then you can use an overgrip to increase the grip size on the pickleball paddle. You can overgrip for the first layer with a size of 1/16th of an inch. The standard grip size is between 4″ to 5″.

How To Make A Pickleball Paddle Grip Smaller?

There are only two ways to make a paddle’s grip smaller. First, you should choose a smaller size 4 1/8-inch grip. Second, you should choose a thinner grip instead of a thick pickleball grip.

Between Two Sizes? Take the Smaller One and Build Up

When the ruler test and the finger test disagree, or your hand falls between two stock sizes, take the smaller grip. A slightly small handle can be fine-tuned: one overgrip adds about a sixteenth of an inch to the circumference, and a second layer a little more, so you can creep up on the perfect fit. A handle that starts too large gives you no such path — it cannot be shrunk, and wrapping your hand around it locks the wrist and overloads the forearm, the strain a correct hold is meant to avoid.

Conclusion

An informative article on measuring your Pickleball paddle grip size is given as a guide. You can use the two tests mentioned above to know the right size for your Pickleball paddle. It will help you strike the ball with both of your hands. You will have stability and a lot of wrist movement if your paddle is the right size. Hence, measure the paddle grip size before investing your money.
