10 Pickleball Serve Tips To Improve Your Game

October 3, 2026 by Jeena Noven

If you’re a beginner who’s getting better every day except for that pesky serve, then this discussion is for you. Every pickleball game starts with a serve so it should be perfect. Not many players can perfect their game without improving their serving on the court.

The tips for improving the pickleball serve are explained so new players can get help. You can go through the information before heading to the practice session. It will not only help you improve your serve but will ensure you learn new techniques that give you an edge in the game.

Pickleball Serving Tips

Pickleball Serve Tips

As a player, one needs to be confident about their serve because that’s what makes them weak or strong on the court. Beginners may think their serve to be weak or inaccurate and that may hold them back during the games. Serving in pickleball is very basic but a very important shot on the court.

Players lose many opportunities because of the wrong serves. They need not worry because the serving tips can help improve the service. As a player, if you can perfect your serve, you can also have an edge over your opponent with a strategic serve.

The tips and strategies for the perfect service are discussed below. All the players can go through the key pickleball serve technique tips and practice them to improve.

1. Learn Proper Foot Placement When Serving

You need to be very careful and vigilant when standing on the court as a pickleball player. Your foot placement is important when you serve because it may result in a fault. You should memorize this rule related to the service foot faults.

The first rule is to keep at least one foot on the court behind the baseline when you are serving. Neither of your feet should be touching the court on the inside or the baseline. You will not like committing a fault at the beginning of the game so optimal foot placement is important.

As a beginner, you may want to improve your foot placement by having a bystander view. Your partner or anyone can review your serve to correct the foot placement. They can guide you so you can correct it before making a serve on the pickleball court.

2. Hit Under Your Belly Button

Another important serving tip is to hit under your belly button. For this tip to make sense, you need to know about the volley serve and drop serve in pickleball. The volley serve is easier to spot because it is always underhand but the drop serve is not popular.

It requires the ball to fall from a height and bounce before the ball comes in contact with the paddle. The drop serve isn’t preferred by many players because they think serves should be underhand. When serving underhand, you should ensure hitting the ball when it is below your belly button.

Your belly button should be a marker for you on the court. The highest point should be under your waist when you bend your wrist joint. Your arm should swing like a pendulum when you serve. Initially, the serve will be stiff because you’ll be thinking about your position. After some practice and patience, your motions will become seamless. Hence, consistency and practice are worth it in the end.

3. Find A Target And Aim

Ask yourself a question: what are you aiming for when on the pickleball court? You’re serving the ball onto the opponent’s side but it is easier said than done. The beginners can mess things up because they’re in the process of perfecting their serve.

It is important to aim at a target before making every shot. You can aim at your opponent’s side before hitting the ball. Your opponent might have a weakness that can be used against him on the court.

You can aim and target in a specific direction and then serve. Taking a few steps before hitting the ball can be helpful. It can help target and improve your serving. Although, you may not be able to correct yourself in a day or a week; this technique never pans out. Keep on aiming at a point on the other side before serving to achieve accuracy.

4. Don’t Be Afraid To Miss A Serve/Commit Fault

Many players, especially beginners, are afraid to miss a serve or commit a fault on the court. Being afraid and conservative on the court can harm your performance. You shouldn’t be putting yourself and the team at risk by this behavior.

If you need a good return, you have to allow yourself to make mistakes and score. Playing safe isn’t always a good option when on the court. You should play without the fear of missing a serve. Missing a serve is ok rather than playing aggressively and losing in the long run. Try to gain control and give yourself a chance to play and score.

5. Have A Pre-Serve Routine

The players need to have a pre-serve routine. This can be anything that works best for you or helps you calm down before the game. You can bounce the ball on the ground or serve with the paddle depending on your comfort level.

As a player, your physical and mental fitness are highly important. A pre-serve routine can help analyze your physical and mental state before the game. You can improve your timing and service by maintaining this routine.

This can help you practice saying your score loudly as well. Saying out the score aloud before serving can help avoid mistakes. The body and mind aren’t built to score and serve at the same time so it’s essential to practice and have a pre-serve routine.

6. Mix Up Your Serves

It’s impossible to up your serve game unless you understand the concept of mixing. As a pickleball player, you should be able to use different serving techniques. The opponent won’t be able to guess your technique if you keep on changing it.

Once you’ve learned how to serve, start using different options. You can use a driving serve to hit the ball with speed or a lob serve to bounce off the ball from height. These serving options can be used during the game so the opponent isn’t sure of your next move.

Moreover, an inside-out serve or hook serve can be used to hit the ball at the opposite side of the opponent so he fails to hit back. Hence, mixing up your serves gives you an edge over your opponents. You may score points whereas your opponent fails to do so. So, evolving your gaming style and mixing up your serve can help win games.

7. Use Your Shoulders And Legs

Perfecting your service is only possible when you use the right techniques. Your body should act like a pendulum that swings. Although players use their hands when serving but fail to swing their shoulders.

Engaging your legs and shoulders is important when trying to improve the serve. Paddle speed and motion are only possible when you use your strongest muscles. Compress your legs and swing your shoulder when making a serve. Hence, stay relaxed, and use your legs, core, and shoulders to perfect your serve.

8. Serve Deep

Serving deep is one of the best strategies that you can use against your opponents. Although it is not a beginner-friendly strategy, you can use it to become a better player. The opponent has a hard time when you serve deep on the court.

Most pickleball players avoid playing at the backhand so you can use it to have an edge. Avoid being predictable because it can give your opponents an upper hand. You should not overplay the serve and target near the baseline or center.

As a player, you should always aim inside the line or consider other factors too. Wind can sometimes move your pickleball in an unwanted direction so it’s better to consider all the factors before serving deep.

9. Invest In A Good Pair Of Shoes

As a pickleball player, you should always have a comfortable pair of shoes. Pickleball players do not have a uniform or a dress code that needs to be followed but it would be best if you invest in good shoes. Your shoe pair should be lightweight, comfortable, supportive, and breathable.

It is important to wear a good pair on the court because you will play without worrying about them. Being uncomfortable on the court can mess up your game. Hence, your feet should not be squished, rubbed, or hurt when playing.

10. Learn How To Paddle

Pickleball paddles come with different grips. As a player, you should know your paddle because grip is important. The gripping technique is important for beginners to perfect their serve.

The handshake technique is recommended for beginners because it is simple and most players can get it right. The Western technique can also be used by players after they learn the handshake technique. Feeling the grip and knowing where your hands are on the paddle are important.

Rotate your hands if you are holding the paddle in the wrong way. Keep on practicing because it’ll make you less conscious about the hand’s position. Hence, with time you’ll just hold the paddle and play without focusing on changing the grip or holding position.

Pickleball Serve Tips For Beginners

The simple rules that can help beginners with serving are explained below. Refer to them if you need some help to improve your performance.

  • As a beginner, you should aim for the back of the court. Your shot should be aimed for the back of the opponent’s side so it is difficult for him to hit back.
  • Secondly, you should line up your body to perfect the serve. Your shoulders should be in the direction you want the ball to go. This can help target the right place on the other side.
  • Having a nice grip on the paddle is essential. Your paddle works like your hand’s extension. You should keep your wrist loose and swing along the ball.
  • Following your mind and body during the game is important. Keep your body loose, relax, swing your arm, and hit the ball. Please do not lift your head until the paddle comes in contact with the ball.
  • Be consistent before hitting the ball with speed. Consistency and patience are the keys to perfecting your serve on the court.
  • Use your warmup sessions to improve and not to take your frustration out. Know your capacity and build speed during these sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is A Bad Serve In Pickleball?

A bad serve in pickleball is when the ball does not land on the court. The ball might hit the net or go out of the court when hit with speed or aggression.

What Are The 3 Skills Needed To Play Pickleball?

Footwork, agility, and hand-eye coordination are important when playing pickleball. Players need to have these three skills before heading to the court. They can improve their game and performance after learning these skills during the practice sessions.

Where Do You Put Your Feet When Serving In Pickleball?

Your feet should be in contact with the ground but behind the baseline when serving. You should aim and target but your feet shouldn’t be touching the baseline marked on the court.

The One Thing Every Good Serve Has in Common

Strip away the variations and every effective serve shares one trait: depth. A serve that lands in the back third of the service box pushes the returner away from the kitchen line, forces them to hit from a defensive position, and frequently produces a shorter, weaker return — which is exactly the ball your third shot wants. Depth beats drama: a spectacular serve that lands at mid-court, or misses entirely, does less for you than a plain, reliable serve placed deep with a few feet of net clearance. Margin is the partner of depth — aim high enough over the net that a small mis-hit still clears, and target the returner’s backhand corner when you can identify it. Build consistency first, variety second; a serve you land nine times out of ten, deep, will win you more points than any spin experiment.

Conclusion

A detailed article on the pickleball serve tips is written so players can improve their overall performance. If you are a beginner who wants to improve your serving, you can take advantage of the information above. You can practice and up your serving by following the tips.

There’s no need to play for hours to perfect your game. Read the serving tips thoroughly and learn the rules before heading to the court.

Best Pickleball Serves To Master (Beginner To Pro)

October 2, 2026 by Jeena Noven

Explore the best pickleball serves for all levels of players and their results, plus see the tips to improve pickleball.

Pickleball was born out of the fusion of squash, badminton, tennis, and ping pong and is one of the fastest-growing games in America. Playing pickleball seems simple, but believe me, it may take years to learn pickleball strategies. Being a trainer, I can understand how hard it is to learn the complex techniques at the beginning of your pickleball career.

A beginner cannot learn advanced pickleball techniques without proper guidance. One should understand the importance of fast and slow serve, high and soft serve, short angled and sidespin serve. Come with me to see how you can play all these and other serves, build an influence on your opponent, and win the game effortlessly.

Best Pickleball Serves

Playing pickleball is not as easy as it seems; an individual needs to learn all the basics of pickleball, especially its serves. A serve is the initial part of the game; if you are unable to properly serve, then you will be cannot defeat your opponent. The majority of the people try to win the game with the help of fast-paced serves, quick high serves, and strong hit serves, but nothing can happen until you know the basics.

Best Pickleball Serves

Additionally, you cannot learn advanced-level serves if you are a beginner because you need endless practice to perform slice or ATP serve. However, if you go forward step by step, you can effortlessly learn all beginner to intermediate and advanced level serves. I have described them in a sequence, so follow instructions and then move forward to learn other servers because each has a different difficulty level.

Beginner Level Serves

1. Underhand Serve

Underhand serve is not only used in pickleball but also in badminton and tennis. It is one of the most important services for the beginners. If you have started playing pickleball, you should learn how to use the underhand serve. It is the simplest and easiest to perform, and you need 2 to 3 days of practice to master it.

How To Do It?

You need to stand feet apart and hold the paddle comfortably tight. Do not exert extra effort on the grip, and now begin a short tossing motion underhand, then keep the paddle facing the ball while you toss it. Slowly release the ball and slightly touch the paddle with it so the ball reaches the other side of the net; you need to aim diagonally at the service zone of the opponent.

2. Short Serve

Another technique that can make you a winner at the beginning of the game is the short serve, one of the most used serves in pickleball. In this serve, an individual aims to land the ball in the service zone near the net on the opponent’s side. A short serve is hard for the opponent to return; he needs extra effort by bending down and hitting the pickleball ball with quick movement.

How To Do It?

It is similar to the underhand serve; you need to stand feet apart and begin with underhand tossing. In short serve, we slightly swing the ball and aim to land it near the net of the opponent’s side. Release the ball and slightly hit it with minimum effort so that it reaches next to the opponent’s net in the service zone.

  • Result: The ball quickly bounced on the floor and reached the opponent’s service zone. Because it is near the net, he needs to bend down and hit the ball quickly, but returning the short serve is challenging, so there are very few chances the opponent may hit the ball.

3. Deep Serve

The majority of the beginners know the above two servers, but they are unfamiliar with the deep serve. In pickleball, a deep serve is a technique to take the ball near the baseline of the opponent’s court so he cannot hit the ball effectively. Deep serve is very simple to use in the beginning, and during the game, one needs 3 to 4 days to master deep serve.

How To Do It?

Hold your paddle comfortably and begin with the underhand toss, but excerpt slightly more power with an extra swing to hit the ball. When you hit the ball, it will go near the baseline of the opponent’s area. Aim diagonally because the purpose is to take the ball to the end of the court, so the opponent requires time to hit it.

  • Result: Hitting the ball with slightly more force will take it to the end of the court, forcing your opponent to go behind and return it. It will give you time to settle and decide on the next serve. In my opinion, the next serve should be short.

Intermediate Level Serves

1. Short Slice Serve

It is time to reveal my favorite serve in pickleball. I have used it in almost all matches, and it has always worked for me. Similar to the short serve, underhand tossing the ball and hitting it with slice motion while exerting minimum effort. The difference between short slice serve and short serve is that in this one, you slightly slice the ball so it spins and lands in the service area near the net of the opponent, you need to practice a week to learn the short slice technique.

How To Do It?

Stand with feet apart and begin with underhand tossing. Now, hit the ball with slice spin, exerting minimum effort so that it lands in your opponent’s service zone. To slice spin, brush across the back and side of the ball slightly instead of hitting it straight.

  • Result: The slicing hit can spin the ball slightly in the opposite direction you brushed the ball while serving. It is complex to understand the ball’s direction; therefore, your opponent will be unable to pick the spot to return it.

2. Deep Topspin Serve

Remember the deep serve in the beginner-level serves section, where I explained how you can hit the ball in a way that is challenging to return for the opponent when it reaches the deep area of the opponent’s side. The difference between the deep serve and the deep topspin serve is that you need to brush the back and side of the ball in a way that it reaches the baseline of the opponent but moves in a specific, left or right direction.

How To Do It?

Bent down your knees slightly while underhand tossing, and now hit the ball, exerting slightly more power. You need to brush up the ball and hit it upward while tossing it. In this way, the ball can kick up after bouncing on the floor when you brush up its back and side.

  • Result: The ball will be unable to play for your opponent if you take the ball to the bottom of his baseline area. If your opponent effectively returns the ball, hit it back with maximum power in his opposite direction.

3. Disguised Serve

Another intermediate serve that can make you a winner is the disguised serve, one of the most difficult serves in pickleball to return. In this serve, an individual hits a ball in a tricky way. Simply put, you need to trick your opponent by showing him that you are hitting on the left, but in actuality, you hit on the right; anyhow, one needs 2 to 3 weeks of practice to learn disguise serve.

How To Do It?

Because we are hiding our intention to spin, kick up, or powerfully hit, we start with a very casual opening. An underhand tossing is the best way to start the disguise serve. Hold your paddle comfortably so you can make changes in the last moment of your serve, toss the ball, slowly move your paddle, and change the direction or brush type at the very end. As a result, your opponent cannot see quick changes.

  • Result: It can trick your opponent and create an ambiguous condition for him. He requires a few moments to understand the ball’s direction and swing type because he requires more time, so he will be unable to return the ball.

Advanced Level Pickleball Serves

1. Sidearm Serve

Sidearm service is one of the most difficult to perform due to its complex nature, and one needs to practice for more than a month to learn it. The purpose of the sidearm serve is to make it hard for your opponent to pick the direction and speed of the ball. The sidearm serve is challenging to anticipate, and once a pickleball player masters it, he can effortlessly win any match.

How To Do It?

Stand in a position where your feet are apart, facing the net, then grip the paddle comfortably tight. Now, hold the ball in your second hand and lower its height to your writs in the direction of the paddle’s face. Instead of an underhand tossing, you need to swing the arm like you are tossing the stones on the water, so hit the paddle with the ball at the wrist height using your sidearm.

  • Result: Sidearm serve is not only challenging to perform but also difficult to return due to its direction and speed. There can be different types of angles based on your style, and each one requires mastery to perform on the court.

2. Heavy Slice Serve

Another serve that can declare you a champion of the pickleball is the heavy slice serve. It is challenging to perform, but once you learn how to hit the ball with heavy brushing, you can conveniently influence your opponent and impress your game partner. The purpose of a heavy slice spin is to quickly kick the ball in a specific direction so that the opponent cannot pick the angle of the ball.

How To Do It?

Stand your feet apart and bend down your knees, then load energy from your legs. Now, toss the ball casually and hit it with power; brush the ball’s side so it can spin after bouncing back to the ground. The ball’s direction and angle are unpredictable for the opponent.

  • Result: Because you hit the ball with power and give it a heavy brush, it goes sideways, and your opponent cannot anticipate the ball’s direction. In case your opponent returns the ball, you should again give it a heavy slice hit in his opposite direction.

3. Serve and Volley

If you are an aggressive player and like to perform a deceptive serve, you can use serve and volley. It is a type of serve in which you can trick the opponent if you can react quicker than the opponent. The purpose is to disguise the position and direction while serving the ball.

How To Do It?

Start with the casual serve you perform at the beginning of your match, you can perform an underhand tossing or writs level tossing. Hit the ball with power to take the ball to the target spot, so your opponent can effortlessly return the ball.

While you serve the ball, go near the net of your side and be ready to hit the ball again, as your opponent returns your serve, hit it up in the air, and it directly lands on the baseline of your opponent’s court before your opponent is ready to react. As a result, your opponent will miss the ball, and you will get a point.

  • Result: When you serve and then quickly react to the return of your serve up in the air, it confuses the opponent, and while he anticipates the ball’s position, it lands and passes the baseline.

Which Is The Best Serve In Pickleball?

In my opinion, pickleball has no best serve. It is about the skills of a player rather than the type of serve. If he effortlessly plays all kinds of shots, he can influence the opponent and win the game within a few minutes.

When it comes to the best pickleball serve, you need to polish your skills rather than pick up a new pickleball serve. The majority of people are searching for a new kind of technique; instead, they should focus on a single serve, learn it properly, and use it during the match. Pickleball is a simple game if you give it time, but if you try to learn everything overnight, you will find it the most difficult sport on the planet.

People frequently ask me the best serve they should learn to trick the opponent but neglect the fact that learning a serve is not enough until you know the basics of it. Once you understand the basics of pickleball’s initial serve, you can conveniently play the game, whether you are a beginner or an advanced pickleball player.

There is a list of the serves for beginners, intermediate, and advanced players, but none of them work if you do not practice enough. If you just started playing pickleball a few weeks ago and think that you can master the game in a short period, then you should discard the myth of perfection overnight. Go with the sequence I have mentioned above.

First, learn a proper way to perform an underhand serve, then practice the short serve and start performing a deep serve from time to time. Once you think you have passed through the beginner level and have learned all the serves efficiently, then learn slicing and disguise serving. Spot your mistakes and the gaps, and acquire advanced-level skills, such as learning heavy slice and volley serve.

Tips To Improve Pickleball Serve

1. Timing

The most important factor in the game is the timing. If you can assess the ball’s speed, direction, and angle but cannot hit it at the perfect moment, you cannot become a champion. Therefore, you should master timing first instead of focusing on the other skills.

2. Focus

Do not lose focus, and always keep an eye on the opponent’s hands. Focus on the ball’s duration and try to assess the opponent’s pattern. Each pickleball player has a pattern to play, and if we assess their patterns, we can defeat all kinds of players.

3. Relaxation

Hyperactivity like jumping again and again, running fast, and hitting the ball with full force will never work. An individual should be relaxed while playing and not waste energy on jumps or useless physical activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where Can You Stand When Serving In Pickleball?

A server should stand behind the baseline. Stand in between the sideline and the centerline of the court.

Can Pickleball Serve Land In The Kitchen?

No, pickleball serves cannot land in the kitchen area.

Can Any Player Return A Serve In Pickleball?

The individual should return the serve in the receiving court, whether he is a left one or a right player.

Build a Two-Serve System: One Reliable, One Surprise

Nine serves are too many to trust under pressure. Instead, build a two-serve system: one stock serve you can land nine times out of ten — most players choose a deep serve with safe height over the net — and one change-up, such as a short or sliced serve, saved for moments when the returner creeps in or settles into a rhythm. Groove the stock serve until it feels automatic using the routines in our pickleball serve tips, and keep the change-up honest by practising it too — the drop serve makes an ideal low-effort variation.

Final Thoughts

Pickleball is one of the most played sports throughout America, it is known as the simplest and easiest sport to play. The reason why pickleball is becoming popular is due to its easy-to-understand rules. Additionally, pickleball lovers claim that it is similar to less-impact exercise, which has health benefits.

On the other hand, beginners in pickleball clubs frequently search for ways to learn new techniques, such as serves and shots. Trainees in my supervision often inquire about the best pickleball serves, and I always explain that there is no best serve; every serve requires time to master, and no one can defeat you once you have perfectly learned a serve.

Pickleball Lob Shot – How And When To Hit Them

October 2, 2026 by Jeena Noven

What is a Pickleball Lob shot and how to execute it perfectly? It is a genuine question and I feel like people should put in more effort in understanding the mechanics and execution of the shot rather than blindly practicing it the way they see it. This is because the overall body movement, paddle angling, and the force with which you hit the ball are the most important things in determining the effectiveness of the shot.

Plus, it is always better to have a few shots up in your Pickleball arsenal that would tip the odds in your favor and win your game easily without too much effort. Of course, it is a difficult shot to execute and you would have to practice it quite a lot to successfully make this shot.

Pickleball Lob Shot

What Is A Pickleball Lob Shot?

The Pickleball Lob Shot is a defensive serve shot aimed to push your opponent to move into a vulnerable position toward the baseline. It is a swerving shot with a lot of names such as Sky shot, Pop up, Sky ball, Moon ball, and High Floaty ball. In this shot, the player puts more force into hitting the ball than normal while serving.

Pickleball Lob Shots

Furthermore, the aim is to land the ball farther down on the field at the opponent’s side, so that the opponent would be forced out of the Kitchen area just to hit the ball in time. This would buy you enough time to plan your next shot effectively and take the opponent off guard. The chances of you making a score in such a situation is around 95%.

However, it is a tricky shot and needs a lot of practice to perfect the strategy. So, if you can’t yet use this shot effectively to your advantage, don’t worry because perfection comes with time, and sooner or later, you will become a master at it.

Is Lob Shot Good In Pickleball?

The Lob shot is like a gamble and even expert pickleball players sometimes go wrong with this shot. This is because the right technique is required to get the ball to land in the perfect spot in the opposite direction. It involves using the perfect hand and muscle movement, using the correct force, and hitting the ball at a precise angle.

A slight mistake in any of these things would destroy your momentum and hence might give your opponent an edge over you and tip the scales in your favor. So, make sure that you practice this shot as many times as possible on an actual pickleball field so that you can perfect your technique.

Other than that, the best thing about the Lob Shot is that, if used correctly and precisely, it will destroy the rhythm of your opponent right from the start. If you can handle the subsequent shots, it will win you the match in no time at all.

How To Hit A Lob Shot In Pickleball?

As I mentioned earlier, hitting a Lob Shot in Pickleball is a little tricky and requires proper technique. Simple practice won’t help you get the shot right unless you are practicing the right way. So, I would suggest that you learn how to do it the right way first before you try to execute it.

1. Contact Point

This is the most important step of the Pickleball Lob shot and you must know about it. The contact point is the angle at which you hold the paddle while hitting the pickleball. To put it simply, the paddle must be exactly beneath the ball rather than behind the ball. The face of your paddle must be pointing towards the sky rather than slanted away from it.

2. Follow Through

The follow-through is the positioning of your body right after you hit the ball in the opposite direction. One leg must be pointed forward while the other must be slightly bent at the knee behind.

Your arm must be lifted toward the sky right after hitting the ball. This body positioning ensures that you put in just enough force and edge into your hit so that the ball lands in the right spot on the other side.

3. Slower Paddle Speed

Many people think that putting in force means that you must move your paddle harder and faster. That is wrong and will never help you achieve perfection in your shot. This will only disrupt your momentum and hence give an edge to your opponent rather than tipping the odds in your favor.

So, it means that you should be relying utterly on your body movement and force to get the ball where you want to send it rather than the hard/fast-hitting of the paddle on the ball. The movement of the paddle should also be precisely calculated rather than using shear force.

Perfect Time To Use A Lob Shot In Pickleball

The Lob Shot is a very technical serving shot and should only be used when hitting the ball with strategy and executed with deeply calculated moby language and movement. Now, the question is, how would you know when is the right time to make the Lob Shot, right?

Well, there are a few tips that I am about to share with you that will give you a good judgment over when to use this shot. To put it simply, you must look for a few pointers in the overall stance and positioning of your opponent before making this shot. The better you can judge your opponent’s stance, the better your chances are at successfully getting the shot right.

1. When Playing Offensively

If your style is to play offensively and finish the game with aggressive shots, then the perfect execution of the Lob Shot would win you the match in no time at all. However, if you are planning to play on the defensive side, then you won’t be able to handle this shot at all even if you do manage to get it done perfectly, the subsequent gameplay would be harder for you to manage.

2. Opponent Is Focused On The Kitchen Area

If you notice the commitment of your opponent mainly in the Kitchen area of the court, then it would be the perfect time to dislodge his momentum. Landing the ball towards the perimeter of the court would push him towards the base line hence taking him off guard.

Afterwards, the subsequent gameplay would be focused more towards the perimeters of the court hence putting him at a disadvantage. Hence, there would be no time before the opponent loses the game to you.

3. Opponent’s Poor Stance

The best time to execute the Pickleball Lob Shot would be when the opponent has a poor stance. This would mean that the opponent is not focused, is not in proper positioning, or is not looking forward towards you. At such a time, the Lob Shot would be unexpected and hence throw him off balance.

You might even score a shot right there and then if your opponent is not vigilant enough to catch the ball in time you perform the shot with perfection. So, you must always keep a sharp eye out for the positioning and stance of your opponent.

How Do You Counter A Lob In Pickleball?

If you are on the receiving end of an expertly executed Lob shot, things can get a little critical for you. If you are not careful enough, you might end up losing your balance and thereby the match itself. So, it’s not just that you should practice throwing a good Lob shot, rather, you must also be prepared to deal with it in case your opponent uses it on you.

Now, there are a few easy ways in which people counter a Lob shot. The First method is to counter the Lob shot with a Lob shot. Honestly speaking, it is not a very great idea because that is exactly what your opponent would be expecting from you 99% of the time. This would lower your chances of gaining the momentum of the game even further.

So, if you want to be better than average, then you would have to react aggressively to this shot rather than defensively. You might be forced back into behind the baseline, but if you react with a smash shot, it will require your opponent to hit the fastball with equal force hence, decreasing his chances of throwing the ball in the kitchen and thereby ruining your momentum even further.

Hence, you will better be able to regain your momentum and tip the scales of the game back in your favor rather than letting the opponent get his way. So, always remember that countering a Lob shot with a Lob shot is not a very good idea.

Types Of Lobs

There are mainly two types of Lob shots namely, the Regular/Basic Lob shot and the Topspin Lob shot. There’s only a slight difference between the two but the effect is different. Let’s discuss the two types of Lob shots briefly down below.

1. Basic/Regular Lob Shot

The Regular Lob Shot is the easiest and the most common one. It is more suitable for the beginner and the intermediate pickleball players. The steps I mentioned above are related to the Regular Lob shot. It is easier to execute and even counter during the gameplay.

2. Top Spin Lob Shot

The TopSpin Lob shot is slightly different from the Regular Lob shot as it involves a slight spin. In this shot, the player only slightly moves the paddle while hitting the ball to give the ball a spin.

This spin makes the direction of the ball extremely difficult to predict after it hits the ground on the other end of the court. Hence, the opponent might end up missing the shot altogether thereby earning you an instant point!

However, it is an advanced level shot and only practiced by highly trained pickleball professionals mainly because it is hundreds of times harder to execute properly. It takes more effort, time, and practice to make the perfect shot and some players never get to do it ever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is The Pickleball Lob Shot Difficult To Execute?

Yes, the pickleball Lob shot is a little difficult to execute particularly because it depends upon the body language of the player and his muscle movement. It is also dependent upon the precise angling of your paddle and the force with which you hit the ball. So, the perfect combination of all three determines the accuracy and perfection of your shot.

Two Different Lobs: Defensive and Offensive

Struggling with lobs hit against you? Our companion guide on how to defend the lob in pickleball covers reading the shot early, the drop-step turn, and when to take the overhead or let the ball bounce.

Players talk about “the lob” as one shot, but it does two opposite jobs. The defensive lob is hit from deep in your court when you are in trouble: your team is pinned at the baseline, out of position, or beaten — and the goal is simply time. Hit it high and deep, buy four or five seconds, and use them to recover to the kitchen line together. The offensive lob is the opposite: hit from at or near the kitchen line, disguised as a dink, floated over the opponent’s backhand shoulder when they are leaning in and crowding the net. Same motion as your dink, different intention — that disguise is what makes it work. Respect its limits either way: wind wrecks lobs, and a short lob against a mobile opponent is an overhead smash waiting to happen.

The Bottom Line

So, it is safe to say that the Pickleball Lob shot is indeed one of the most useful shots that a player can master. It instantly tips the scales of the game in your favor and you get an upper hand over your opponent. However, it requires a lot of practice and effort on your part to properly carry out this shot on the court because a slight misstep might ruin your shot and cost you your game.

On the other hand, you must also prepare yourself for the receiving end of the Lob Shot, especially the TopSpin Lob Shot. If you want to counter the Lob shot effectively then it will also require you to do a lot of practice on the field because otherwise, your opponent would have the upper hand on you and you might end up losing the game.

October 1, 2026 by Jeena Noven

If you are interested in learning about drop serve in Pickleball or you are confused about why recently there has been so much hype about drop serve in the pickleball game, you are here at the right place. There is no doubt that changing the rules in any of the games creates a heated conversation and if you add a new rule of serving in the pickleball game, the talk of the town can be controversial.

Here in this article, we will look at the detailed analysis of drop serving, what it is, its advantages and disadvantages, and other relevant information. Make sure to pay attention to the details below so you can understand what drop serve is and whether you can use the serving style in the game or not.

Pickleball Drop Serve

The guide sheds light on pickleball drop serve, its advantages, disadvantages of the drop serve rules, and other relevant factors. We will first look at what a drop serve is and then will look at other questions and queries related to it.

What Is A Drop Serve?

The pickleball drop serve is the serving style in which you serve after the ball bounces when you drop it on the ground. You need to make sure that in the drop serve the server is not willingly creating the bounce on the ball, instead gravity is the only reason that is creating the bounce.

Servers can release the ball from any height, but the only restriction is that they are not allowed to create any type of manipulation, spin, or any type of higher bounce willingly. You cannot force a bounce on the ball nor can the ball come down quickly. This drop serve is quite different from the volley serve.

Is It Legal To Drop Serve In Pickleball?

Yes, Dropping the ball on the serve and then hitting it after it gets bounced back is legal. As of January 2022, a serve that dropped the ball and then hit it after the bounce was legalized. The USA Pickleball Association then made it permanent in 2022. Here are some of the strict rules that you must follow to drop serve legally. Otherwise, you cannot drop serve during a pickle wall.

USA Pickleball’s Drop Serve Rules (In Easy To Understand Wording)

Here is the description of the drop-serve rules as explained by the USA Pickleball Association. We have tried our best to explain the rules in easy-to-understand wording below so that you can get to know about the rules of pickleball drop serve and the limitations that you have to keep in mind during drop serving.

  • You need to make sure that you are dropping the ball only from one hand or from the paddle face. You cannot use both of your hands for this purpose.
  • While drop serving, you should keep in mind that the maximum height at which the ball can be released is within the server’s reach.
  • Keep in mind you can only hit the ball when it gets bounced at least once. You have to wait for at least one bounce before hitting the ball.
  • There are no strict rules regarding the number of times the ball can bounce. It can bounce unlimited times, and there are no restrictions on where it bounces or lands.
  • You have to drop-serve the ball in such a way that either the referee or receiver can see the ball when you are releasing it. It should be visible when released from your hand.
  • You must have to replay that drop serving in case the receiver or referee is unable to see the ball at release. This drop serving needs to be replayed for assurance.
  • Only gravity can attract the ball to bounce, and you are not allowed to apply any force to it.

Is Drop Serve For Pickleball Professional Players?

Only a few professional pickleball players can drop serve and use this technique in the tournament. It is an extremely rare serving technique that has been seen in tournaments.

The reason behind this is that drop-serving ads are consistent in the game, which is actually for amateur players or beginners. That is why only a limited number of pros use drop-serving techniques during pickleball games.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Drop Serve

Here is a detailed analysis of the pros and cons of the pickleball drop serve technique. There are five advantages of drop serving that are mentioned here for a better understanding of the drop serving and what benefits you can get.

Advantages Of Drop Serving

1. Improvement In Consistency

You can enjoy a great improvement in the consistency of hitting the shots with the drop-serving technique. It is particularly hitting off the ball forehand and backhand that mimics ground strokes. Since you have more experience with this motion, this technique helps you in creating and improving the consistency in the game.

2. 2 Handed Backhand

Those who have a strong two-handed backhand can get the ultimate benefits of drop serving. This is because they will experience more power and more stability in the backhand serve than in the drop serving technique.

3. Variability While Serving

Learning drop serving is adding a new style to yourself. This makes you unpredictable for the receiving player which ultimately strengthens you in the court.

4. Added Spin

Adding a spin in the ball after drop serving is much easier than in the other situation. It does not matter what type of spin you want in yourself, drop serve helps you in achieving your target easily and smoothly. Moreover, while dropping serves the ball is generally in a lower position than typical, which also gives you an advantage of adding notable spin to your serve.

5. Easier To Learn And Ideal For Beginners

There is no doubt that learning drop serving is quite easy and simple. Beginners and newcomers should go with drop serving instead of volley serving. It’s not only easy to learn and understand but also simple to apply and understand what is legal in this type of serving and what is not.

Disadvantages Of Drop Serving Technique

Just like the advantages of drop serving, this type of serving technique has some disadvantages. Here is an explanation of the disadvantages of the drop serving technique so that you can understand why professional players do not prefer it.

1. External Variables That Affect The Ball Movement

Certain external variables affect the ball’s movement including wind, temperature, and the strange spot on the ground’s surface. You have no idea what will happen to the ball after it leaves your hands. You get no more control over the ball after it leaves your hands.

The wind can blow the ball and change its direction, resulting in inconsistent and unpredictable shots. Moreover, the ball may hit a strange spot on the court’s surface, ultimately causing problems in making contact. Moreover, when the temperature is cooled, the ball bounces higher than when the temperature is hot. Keep in mind these added variables also affect the movements of the ball and can make it inconsistent.

2. Waist Height Is Higher Than Bounce Height

If you want to hit the ball from a higher position, you will not get this when you drop serve. This is because the waist height is quite higher than the bounce height and the ball will rarely reach your waist height in any turn.

Keep in mind that you cannot add any spin or power before dropping. Wind gravity is the only force responsible for creating bounce in the ball, and that force will determine the height limitations the ball will reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who Should Drop Serve?

If you are a beginner in the game or are someone who has mechanical consistency problems in the serve, you should go with the drop serve technique. Moreover, a professional player can also get benefits from the drop serve serving technique as it adds a new style of serving to the game.

What Is A Drop-Serve Pickleball Serve?

The pickleball drop serve is the serve in which you drop the ball and wait until it comes back after a bounce before hitting. Unlike traditional volley serve, the drop serve is ideal for beginners and newbies in the field.

Is Pickleball Drop Serve Permanent?

Yes, pickleball drop serve is a permanent serving option. It was made permanent at the very start of 2022 by Pickleball’s USA association. Since then until now pickleball drop serve has been used by beginners and newbies to the game.

Can You Play Pickleball Every Day?

Playing pickleball daily is tempting but you need to make sure to provide appropriate rest to your body. In case you have sore muscles and pain in joints after playing Pickleball every day make sure to use some home remedies particularly ice to reduce the inflammation and pain.

Is Pickleball An Expensive Sport?

No, not at all playing pickleball is quite affordable and budget-friendly. When compared with other sports, pickleball is one of the most affordable sports that you can go ahead with. Its typical costs include the cost of its equipment and safety gear used during the game.

What Is A Legal Drop Serve?

The drop serve in pickleball was created for players who have disabilities and who found it difficult to perform a volley serve. Legal drop serve is the type of serving technique in which a player drops the ball regardless of the height he wants and waits until the ball comes back after a bounce before hitting it. Keep in mind throwing off the ball or jumping off the ball is not allowed during drop serve.

Is the Drop Serve Legal? (Yes — and Here’s the Catch)

The drop serve has been fully legal since it entered the rulebook, first provisionally in 2021 and permanently since. Its freedom is the point: none of the volley serve’s restrictions — underhand motion, paddle below the wrist, contact below the waist — apply to a drop serve. In their place is one simple condition: the ball must be dropped, not thrown, tossed upward, or spun. Let it fall naturally from your hand (or off the paddle face) and strike it after the bounce. Because nobody can impart the extreme spin a tossed volley serve can carry, the drop serve is also the most repeatable option for new players — the same bounce, the same contact, every time. Many developing players use it as their primary serve and only add a volley serve once consistency is automatic. Compare it against the full serving rules and the best pickleball serves to build your arsenal.

This guide tells you about pickleball drop serve, what it is basically, and whether it is legal to drop the ball while serving pickleball. We have also explained the rules in easy-to-understand writing and elaborated on the advantages and disadvantages of performing drop serving.
