What is The Difference Between Indoor And Outdoor Pickleball Ball?

September 10, 2026 by Jeena Noven

This guide does a side-by-side comparison to tell you what the difference is between indoor and outdoor pickleball balls.

What is The Difference Between Indoor And Outdoor Pickleball Ball? | Indoor Vs Outdoor Pickleballs

The most obvious difference between indoor and outdoor Pickleball balls is that they are designed for different pickleball courts. For instance, indoor balls are designed for enclosed venues, where players can enjoy a slower spin and a casual game. Indoor pickleball balls are preferred by professional players who want to enjoy speed, momentum, and thrill in outdoor conditions, where they are constantly bothered by extreme wind and weather interference. You can use the same pickleball paddle on both pickleball balls.

Difference Between Indoor And Outdoor Pickleball Ball?
Indoor Vs Outdoor Pickleballs

But the question is, which one is better for you? Well, the answer is not simple, and multiple factors count into it, the difference between these balls being the foremost important. According to USAPA official pickleball rules, pickleball ball size should be between 2.874 inches (7.30cm) to 2.972 inches and circumference between 9.029 inches (22.93cm) and 9.337 inches (23.72cm).

Here are some common differences you will find between indoor and outdoor Pickleball balls, so dive right in to know more.

1. Holes

The first and foremost difference you will find between these types of Pickleball balls is the number of holes. Outdoor Pickleballs have approximately 40 holes, as compared to indoor balls, which only have around 26 holes. The reason behind this is to cancel the external factors on the pickleball court to make them effective for specific conditions.

Now, when we talk about outdoor courts, they have harsh weather conditions and intense wind, which makes the ball move at a faster speed. And more holes mean strong, thick construction and resistance to wind, so the ball is able to move in a straight trajectory. This also interferes with the aerodynamics of the ball for better bounce.

Number Of Holes Of Indoor & Outdoor Pickleball Balls, Pickleball Ball Holes

In contrast, speaking of indoor pickleball courts have fewer holes, and each hole has a uniform gap between them. Not only this, all the holes are of the same size to create more negative space and make the ball travel at a slower pace. That said, there are also hybrid balls used in Pickleball with around 32 holes.

Apart from the number of holes, the diameter of a pickleball also plays an important role in the construction. Though there are no specific criteria, indoor balls generally come with a wide hole diameter, which is around 0.43 inches. On the contrary, outdoor balls tend to have pickleball ball hole sizes of around 0.282 inches in diameter for better maneuverability.

2. Weight

The next thing difference between indoor and outdoor Pickleball balls is their weight. There are no specific rules for pickleball ball weight, but it should be between 0.78 ounces (22.1g) and 0.935 ounces (26.5g). In a nutshell, outdoor balls tend to be a bit heavier than indoor ones. The logic behind them being heavier and bulkier is that these balls are designed to survive the outdoor weather and a fast speed.

Another reason for the outdoor balls being heavier is the more holes. Because they generally have around 40 holes and a wider diameter that covers less surface area and the negative space around the holes. Hence, this adds to the weight.

Similarly, the outdoor balls are bulkier and thicker because they are designed to follow a straight path despite the fast wind. This complements the conditions on the court and makes them resistant to weather interference. That said, we cannot undermine the pickleball ball material construction in this aspect, as it also plays a vital role in determining the weight.

On the contrary, indoor balls have fewer holes and more negative spaces, making them thinner and lighter in weight. This is why you will find it easy to achieve a slower pace on the indoor court. Likewise, they are made up of low-density plastic that cuts down the weight and makes them suitable for intended use.

3. The Hardness Of The Balls

Almost all Pickleball balls are made up of plastic, which is why they are hard and strong. That said, you cannot tell about the level of hardness just by seeing and touching it. For this purpose, technicians use the durometer, which has a hardness measurement scale, making it easy for you to choose the right type of ball for the right court.

When it comes to measuring hardness, it is typically divided into four classes of plastic, each having a certain rating. This includes,

  • LDPE – Low-Density Polyethylene: 40-50 D
  • HDPE – High-Density Polyethylene: 60-70 D
  • PP – Polypropylene: 70-83 D
  • PET – Polyethylene Terephthalate: 85-95 D

When we compare both types of balls, it is evident that outdoor Pickleball balls tend to be a little harder than indoor ones, and most of it comes down to the court. Because we need a fast pace in outdoor conditions, these balls use harder high polyethylene plastic. This is also the reason why these balls are thicker and heavier.

On the contrary, indoor Pickleball balls are made up of low-density polyethylene plastic, which is a little softer and allows you to achieve a slower pace. Typically, they have a general 40-50 Shore D rating, which makes it low to medium hard. Hence, you will find them thinner and lighter than usual.

Durability And Material Construction

Likewise, another difference you will find between the two types of balls is durability. Most people think that Pickleball balls are designed to last you forever, which is not quite true. After some time, even a really good ball will lose its shape and hardness despite the court.

Overall, it comes down to the construction material used for the ball. And the rule of thumb is that the more density plastic has, the more durable and harder the ball will be. Therefore, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that outdoor balls tend to be a lot more durable than indoor ones.

Though both types of balls are made up of plastic, the nature of plastic differs tremendously. For instance, outdoor pickleball balls are made up of high-density polyethylene plastic, whereas companies use low to medium-density polyethylene plastic (which is a lot softer).

Overall, the TPE harder plastic used in outdoor balls is resistant to cracks, making them efficient in surviving harsh conditions. That said, hard plastic other than TPE is prone to cracking, which makes it a little tricky to find the right match. When it comes to the softer plastic, they usually get damaged by the continuous bounce on the court.

Which Type Of Pickleball Ball Is Best?

The right type of ball can take your game up to a whole new level. There are a number of factors that count when it comes to finding the right type of Pickleball balls. Following are some of the things you must consider before choosing a Pickleball ball for yourself.

  • Each court has a different type of ball used in them. Hence, you need to choose a ball that is designed specifically for that court.
  • A player’s skill rating also makes a huge difference in your decision to choose a ball. For instance, beginners usually like playing slow swings, which is only possible with indoor Pickleballs. And if you are an experienced player who likes speed and momentum on the field, the outdoor ball may work best for you.
  • The external conditions of the court further need to be considered when it comes to choosing the right Pickleball. If you are most likely to play in outdoor conditions, it is important to get a ball that can resist extreme wind. In this case, the more holes are always better.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Type Of Balls Do You Use For Outdoor Pickleball Games?

Outdoor balls are preferred by professional players who are fond of enjoying outdoor Pickleball games. This is because these balls are hard, thicker, and have more holes. This helps players with a perfect balance and momentum, not to mention resist weather interference ideally.

What Do Beginner Pickleball Players Use?

Beginners usually prefer using indoor Pickleball balls because they are easy to use and provide you with a slower swing. These balls are soft and lighter in weight, so players don’t have to put in extra effort to get used to them.

Do Pickleball Balls Crack In The Cold?

Yes, Pickleball balls are prone to cracks, especially when they are in cold conditions. This is because they are made up of plastic that easily gets affected by external factors on the court, cold being one of them.

Do Outdoor Pickleball Balls Have Large Or Small Holes?

Typically, outdoor Pickleball balls have around 40 holes with a smaller (0.282 inches) diameter. These holes have an equal size with a uniform distribution all over the ball, which makes them thicker, heavier, and rugged against extreme weather conditions.

How Many Holes Does An Indoor Pickleball Balls Have?

Indoor Pickleball balls have approximately 26 holes with a wider diameter. Like outdoor Pickleball balls, these holes have equal sizes with a uniform distribution.

What Does A Pickleball Look Like?

A pickleball ball looks like a large perforated ball with round holes and is heavier than a wiffle ball. They produce less bounce than tennis balls. A pickleball is present in different colors and weights for indoor and outdoor courts. Number of holes also differs both for indoor and outdoor courts.

Can You Use Outdoor Pickleballs Indoors?

Yes, you can use outdoor pickleballs for indoor courts, but it is not advisable. The reason is that outdoor pickleballs are heavier, designed for rough court surfaces, more durable, and can resist wind. On the other hand, indoor pickleballs are lightweight, designed for smooth court surfaces, and produce less bounce. It will not provide the desired results and also will not be a good experience for any pickleball player.

What Is A Pickleball Made Of?

Pickleballs are crafted from polymer, resin, and hard plastic material.  The surface of the pickleball ball usually has holes, which helps in reducing air friction during play.

How Long Do Pickleball Balls Last?

7 Mistakes Made By Recreational Pickleball Players

September 9, 2026 by Jeena Noven

Here is a complete guide on the common mistakes made by recreational players and how to fix them through practice.

Mistakes Made By Recreational Pickleball Players And How To Fix Them

Pickleball is a great time pass for recreational players who enjoy leisure while being productive. However, for anyone not taking it seriously, it is important to note that the game is not the same for recreational and professional players.

Not many people understand this entirely and try to do professional pickleball tricks with their limited skill set. This ruins their entire experience, and they commonly get fed up with it. This is also why they make the biggest pickleball mistakes.

If you are in a similar situation and want to know the common mistakes recreational players make, here is a complete guide. It also tells you how to fix them. So, dive right in for more.

Beginner Pickleball Mistake

1. Hitting Off A Fancy Spin

The biggest pickleball mistake most recreational players tend to make is playing their spins fancy. Although it sounds great and works incredibly well for professionals, it is not the best for beginners.

If you are new to the game, they can work once in a blue moon. However, attempting them repeatedly can lead to irreversible mistakes in pickleball. Also, if the person on the other side of the pickle net is better than you, forget about winning the battle.

Before you even plan to play fancy spins, consider that they demand a lot of skill and accuracy. This sounds a bit difficult for recreational players. Hence, it is always wise to avoid them at all costs. I am not saying you should never hit a spin but always approach it intelligently.

2. Improper Serving Technique

Another common mistake in pickleball that can break your game is not having the right serving technique. This pickleball serving mistake is primarily because most recreational players try to be all fancy, making them not prioritize the serving technique.

You first need to identify a comfortable technique to eliminate this habit. Once it is done, practice it repeatedly to improve the flip. To master any serving technique, keep your back straight and pickleball paddle perpendicular to the ground. This will help you in balancing each shot, including the serves.

3. Hitting The Ball Too Hard

Smashing the pickleball ball as hard as you can is tempting. But, the issue is that it can land you in a difficult situation. These shots are generally known as power shots and drive shots. These pickleball trick shots are for advanced players, partly because of their unruly and unpredictable nature.

But don’t worry, as I am here with a simple trick to resist the urge to hit the ball too hard. Instead of playing a power hit, you should focus on returning the ball to the opponent’s side. This will divert your attention from using all your force to enjoy the sudden moment.

4. Standing In A No-Man Land

Another beginner pickleball mistake is staying in the no man’s land. Generally, you have two places to stand in the field: the baseline or the pickleball kitchen area. Suppose you are not standing on any of these sides; it is considered a no-man land, and doing so will ruin your game.

This is the most consistent fault most recreational players tend to make. So, you will have to put in extra effort to avoid this. All you need to do is make sure you don’t give the opponent a chance to hit the shot in the direction of your feet. This is because handling such shots is impossible for newbies.

5. Poaching Unnecessarily

Another biggest mistake pickleball players make is poaching at times when it is not required. In simple terms, poaching means stealing a shot from your partner. Most recreational players like to do it, but they forget that scooting to their side can be annoying for the other person playing from your side.

Poaching is generally best for professional players accustomed to playing pickleball doubles. Part of the reason is that they know when and how to attempt this strategy.

The right way of doing it is having the male member on the left side who is responsible for scooting over to the woman’s side and hitting the shot. Even if you are attempting it, note that it is risky as you leave the left side unattended for a long time. Hence, the opposite side can easily take advantage of it.

6. Having Asymmetric Dinking Battles

Although cross-court dinking matches can be a thrilling experience, they are not always ideal for recreational players. They are seriously risky if you are a beginner and learning the basics. Also, playing them against someone better than you on the field is a recipe for disaster.

Firstly, an intelligent player wouldn’t get into such a situation. But, if, for some reason, you are caught up by a better opponent, try counting his/ her dinks. Once you have counted up to three dinks, hit back a bailout dink. This will give you an edge. This strategy also helps newbies gain momentum.

7. Playing Low Smashes

Last but not least, another reason you are not getting better at defending your stance is playing too low smashes. Most beginner players tend to hit back the shots while in the kitchen area.

This happens when a player on the other side of the net hits the shot with the third drop at an awkward height. In this scenario, most recreational players think they can volley the ball or play the smash. But it is really difficult to hit back with such smashes.

To avoid pickleball beginner mistakes, you must resist jumping into the kitchen area. Instead, push yours to a distance where it is comfortable to hit the ball in the direction you want to play the shot. Or, if you are not confident, don’t attempt it.

People Also Ask

What Is The Ten-Second Rule In Pickleball?

Well, it is the simplest rule, yet most beginners forget it. According to this rule, the server has only ten seconds to serve when the scores have already been called. If he/ she crosses this limit, it is a fault, and the server loses the points. This rule exists in the game, as it keeps the game simple and moving for the entire time.

What Are Some Common Mistakes Recreational Pickleball Players Make?

There are multiple mistakes recreational players make during pickleball matches. This includes not having the right paddle, improper posture, hitting the ball too hard, and copying fancy spins inspired by professionals. Similarly, they like to play unnecessary spins and poach.

Why Do Recreational Players Often Hit The Ball Too Hard?

Most recreational players enjoy playing multiple games like tennis, racquetball, and pickleball. Because they always play tennis and racquetball, hitting the ball hard is considered the best strategy. This is quite the opposite in pickleball. This is why players take more time to learn this skill.

How Can Players Improve Their Ability To Watch The Ball?

The only way to improve your ability to watch the ball is through practice. For this, while playing warm-up matches, always keep your eyes on the ball from when it leaves your side to when it is on your opponent’s side. Make sure to pick up things like tracking the ball’s movement and how the ball behaves with different techniques.

Why Is Footwork Important For Pickleball Games?

Footwork is significant when it comes to pickleball games. This is because having the right posture can keep your body relaxed and firm. So, it is easy to move quickly and keep your movements in control. This is especially important if you are fond of doubles, as you will always be on your toes while communicating with your partner. And the only trick to making it better is repeated practice.

How Can Pickleball Players Improve Their Communication With Their Partners?

Hand signals and cues can allow players to communicate better on the pickleball field, especially while playing the doubles. For this, you can even make hand signals that are explicit to you and your partner. For instance, you can signal who will hit the ball or who will poach from which direction, and so on.

How To Get Better At Pickleball?

To improve at pickleball, you must know all the rules, strategies, and tricks that pro players use. First, learn all pickleball rules, including kitchen, scoring, serves, and dinking. After that, practice the pickleball game by performing drills. To get an edge, keep your opponent back and learn different pickleball shots, including dink, Erne, and chop.

Mistake 8: Backpedaling for Lobs

When a lob goes up, most recreational players shuffle backwards, eyes in the sky — and either mishit the overhead off-balance or, worse, fall. Backpedaling is the most dangerous movement in the sport. The correct pattern is a turn: pivot sideways like a tennis player, move back in a crossover run with the paddle already up, then hit the overhead moving forward again, or let the ball bounce and play it from behind the baseline if you cannot get set. It feels slower; it is actually faster and far safer. Our lob shot guide covers when lobs work against you, and the recovery positions tie back to the basics in how to play pickleball.

Conclusion

In conclusion, if you are a recreational player, my advice is to keep things simple and not try to do fancy stuff just because it looks cool on the field. The biggest pickleball mistake most beginners make is to try to copy professionals, which is why they usually get fed up with the entire game.

Finally, I hope this guide has been helpful for you in figuring out what you have been doing wrong all this time and how to fix it.

The Official Rules For Line Calls In Pickleball

September 8, 2026 by Jeena Noven

Read a brief article on the official rules for line calls in Pickleball to get some help and assistance as a newbie.

Pickleball is all fun and games unless you start playing it professionally. However, it is liked by many because it is not physically excruciating like other sports. If you are a new player who seems to develop an interest in the game like me, you can dig into the article below to look for some rules. These will help you increase your knowledge and improve the game.

I played the game for at least three months before breaking down the rules for line calls in Pickleball for you all. These are simple yet important to help you maintain the winning streak. Please read all the calling rules carefully before stepping onto the court. The information will help you have a competitive advantage over others in the game.

The Official Rules For Line Calls In Pickleball

Pickleball line call rules showing a ball touching the line is in and a ball with a clear gap is out
Line calls: touch the line and it’s in; you must see a clear gap to call it out.

If you are new to Pickleball, you should know some basic rules that will help improve the game and win against the opponents. Knowledge of the official rules is crucial for staying in the game and having a competitive advantage. I have been playing the game for two months and can break down the line call rules for all the newbies. Hence, the rules can be beneficial in the long run.

Pickleball Line Call Rule, Pickleball Line Rules
Pickleball Line Call Rules

1. Serve Should Always Land In The Serving Court

The first and the most fundamental rule the entry-level player might know is that the serve should always land in the serving court. A ball entering the non-volley zone or the Kitchen is called “serve out.” You can hit anywhere on the centerline, sideline, or baseline as it will be considered as “serve in.” Hence, this is a basic rule that should be kept in mind if you serve.

2. Players Are Held Responsible For Calling Lines

The players on the court are held responsible for calling pickleball lines when standing on their side. All the players in the game have the right to review the decision or get a second opinion. The referee gives a second opinion to know if the ball is out or would get accepted.

3. Opponents Who Are Not Serving Will Get An Advantage

When going through the rules for line calls in Pickleball, the opponents who are not serving are always at an advantage. They benefit from the doubt because every team has to be treated equally in the game. Appeals are made before the serving team makes their next shot.

However, the pickleball ball can be observed when lined out. In pickleball doubles, one team can call out and wait for the referee to respond. If the ball were out, the opponent team would have an advantage.

Pickleball Rules

The following rules will help you when stepping on the pickleball court. You all might know that the court is 44 feet long and 20 feet wide. In this 20 feet, the 7 feet is dedicated as the “Kitchen” or the non-volley zone. The ball or the player cannot enter the Kitchen or the non-volley area. Now that you know when playing on the court, let’s dig into some pickleball line rules.

1. Begin With A Serve

This game can be played as a single player or in a team of two players. Whatever the case, the game will start from the team standing on either of the sides. The player on the right side will start serving, and the ball is hit diagonally. It has to be ensured that the ball does not fall into the Kitchen on your side of the court.

2. Position Of The Hand

The second and most important thing that can help you win points is to monitor the position of your hands. Keeping the hand below the waist area is mandatory when hitting the stroke. The arm must move upwards so that you move the ball out of the air. Some players drop the ball onto the court and hit it when it rises to their waist.

3. Serve Continues Until A Fault

If either team is serving, it continues until a fault is committed. The service is changed from one team to another after a fault. Most of the time, a serving player commits three types of faults. He might hit the ball into the pickleball net, or it might go beyond the baseline. Lastly, there are chances that the ball lands in the non-volley zone or the Kitchen area. All these will commit a fault, and the service will be transferred to another team.

4. Not Allowed To Stand In Kitchen

Any player cannot hit the ball or serve while standing in the non-volley zone. The players are not to step onto the line of the Kitchen. It is impermissible to enter that 7 feet when hitting the ball. This rule is great for gaining points against opponents. I used to hit the ball near the opponent’s Kitchen, so they had to cross the line, committing a fault.

5. Ball Must Bounce On Court

The ball must bounce on the court before the opposite team hits it back at you. This can be extremely difficult if you play pickleball singles, as one player cannot cover 20 feet of the court. However, the other members can cover near the baseline if you play as a team. I faced many issues when I started to play the game as a newbie because of this rule.

Frequently Asked Question

Can You Cross The Kitchen Line In Pickleball?

Yes, you can cross the Kitchen line in Pickleball if you are not serving. It is allowed to stand in the non-volley zone except for the time you serve.

What Is Not Allowed In Pickleball?

You cannot hit the ball when your hand is above the waistline. Moreover, you cannot stand in the Kitchen while making a shot.

Can Momentum Carry You Into The Kitchen?

Yes, momentum can unconsciously carry you into the Kitchen, which should be avoided at all costs. Even if you are not serving, stay out of the non-volley zone.

Is The Line In Or Out In Pickleball?

In pickleball, when a ball lands on a boundary line, is it considered “in” or “out” according to official rules? When there is a clear difference between the ball and the boundary line, it is considered “out.” On the other hand, when a ball touches any line except the kitchen or non-volley zone, it is considered “in.”

What Happens If You Hit An Out Ball In Pickleball?

The ball is still in the game, as you have to let it bounce first. Saying “out” after the ball touches the court line will be considered as “out.” You can’t hit the ball without letting it bounce once.

Is The Kitchen Line In Or Out In Pickleball?

The kitchen line is considered as “Out” in pickleball. You can’t hit the kitchen or non-volley zone line while serving. You can’t hit the volley without letting it bounce first. All other pickleball court lines of the service area are considered as “In.”

When You Are Not Sure: Give the Benefit of the Doubt

The official tiebreaker is simple: a ball is only ‘out’ when you clearly see space between the ball and the line. If you are unsure, the ball is in — and that applies to your team, so if one partner calls it out and the other sees it in, the ball is in. You may ask your opponents to help with a call on your side, and their view settles it; spectators, however, must never be consulted. Make the call promptly, before playing your return — the same standard runs through the fault rules and the pickleball rules themselves.

Conclusion

A brief article explaining Pickleball’s official rules for line calls is written for your guidance as a newbie. These rules can help you improve and have an advantage over competitors. You need to practice while keeping these basic rules in mind before stepping onto the court for the game. I hope the article explains some essential rules that will be handy during your next match.

I am writing this article to everyone who wants to know how many calories you burn playing pickleball to gain the perfect calorie level.

How To Calculate Your Calories Burned In Pickleball?

Calculating the calories burned during a game of pickleball involves considering various factors such as your body weight, intensity of the game, duration of play, and your metabolic rate. Here’s a basic method to estimate the calories burned:

  1. Determine Your Weight: Knowing your weight is crucial as heavier people burn more calories.
  2. Estimate the Intensity of Your Game: Pickleball can range from light to vigorous intensity. If you’re playing a casual game, it’s likely light to moderate intensity. A competitive game would be more vigorous.
  3. Duration of Play: How long you play affects the total calorie burn.

Calculate Your Resting MET Rate Using Harris Benedict Equation

The Harris-Benedict Equation is a formula that estimates your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), which is the amount of energy expended while at rest in a neutrally temperate environment.

  • For men: 66.47 + (6.24 × weight in pounds) + (12.7 × height in inches) − (6.75 × age in years).
  • For women: 65.51 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) – (4.7 x age in years).

By Using The Metabolic Equivalent Of Task (MET) Method

MET is a unit used to estimate the amount of energy used by the body during physical activity, compared to resting. The study by the IJREP concentrated on middle-aged and senior players, influencing the overall results. Considering players of various ages, a more representative MET value for pickleball would be around 6.5. This places it in a more vigorous category than badminton, yet still not as demanding as tennis.

Calories Burned Per Minute = METs x 3.5 x (your body weight in kilograms) / 200

Number Of Calories Burn During Pickleball

Calories burned playing pickleball per hour by intensity, from casual doubles to competitive singles
Typical reported calorie ranges per hour of play, by intensity.

Burning calories depends on factors like height, weight, and body mass. Also, calories burned depend upon how the person is playing the game and how much effort that person is putting in.

Sometimes, when the game becomes intense and people put in more effort, they burn more calories in less time. Sometimes, people remain relaxed during casual matches, which results in less calorie burn. Generally, if I talk about the common calorie rate that burns while playing pickleball is as follows;

  • People with 160 pounds can burn about 500 calories in an hour.
  • Also, people with 200 pounds are heavier, and with little effort, they can burn calories of about 700 per hour while playing pickleball.
  • Similarly, people with 160 pounds can lose 700 calories per hour after an intense game.
  • Also, people with 200 pounds can lose 900 calories in an hour after more effort.
  • The number of calories burned in pickleball depends upon your effort, which means that from 500-900, your step count range should be 4000-7000. And your steps count also depends upon your playing style and effort.

Sometimes, professional players check their pickleball calories burned after a few games. They get this information usually from the Racquet Sports Center, which knows different methods of calculating the player’s calories burned during pickleball. Also, you can track your calorie burn through certain trackers, which are Fitbits and Apple Watches, that will tell you the amount of calories you have burned in a certain amount of time.

Calories Burned In Pickleball Singles Vs Doubles

When comparing calories burned in singles vs doubles pickleball, the key difference lies in the game’s intensity and the amount of court each player covers. In singles, a player is responsible for the entire court, leading to more movement, higher intensity, and, consequently, a greater calorie burn. Conversely, in doubles, the court is shared between two players, which often results in less movement and a lower calorie burn.

For a rough comparison, an average person might burn about 20% to 30% more calories playing singles than playing doubles in the same duration. However, the exact difference depends on factors like the players’ physical condition, the game’s intensity, and the duration of play.

Calories Burned According To Body Weight

As I discussed earlier, calorie burn depends upon the individual body weight. So, here I will discuss the pickleball calories burned by different body weights per minute, 30 minutes, or an hour. This will help you understand more than how much your body burns calories depending upon your body weight.

  • If your body weight is 125 pounds, you will burn 6.5 calories in a minute, 195 calories in 30 minutes, and 390 calories in an hour.
  • With 150 pounds, you can burn 7.8 calories per minute, 232 calories in 30 minutes, and 464 calories in an hour.
  • People with 175 pounds will burn 9.0 calories per minute, 270 calories in 30 minutes, and their total calories burned will be 540.
  • If your weight is 200 pounds, your calorie burn per minute, 30 minutes, or an hour would be 10.3, 310, and 620, respectively.
  • Also, your calorie burn in a minute would be 11.6, 348 in 30 minutes, and 696 in an hour when your body weight is about 225 pounds.

I am sure you are a little clear that your calorie burn depends upon your body composition and matter. The more you put in the effort, the faster you notice calorie burn.

Weight Loss While Playing Pickleball

When a player’s calories are burnt during the game, it helps lose body weight. Any activity with intense body movement burns extra body fats and helps reduce weight. Calories burn results in weight loss, which leads to a good life. The body fats and calories are your stored food; when this food burns, it helps you maintain a suitable body weight.

To reduce the calculated weight, you should check how many calories you burn during pickleball. To check your calorie intake, you need to use basal metabolic rate (BMR), which tells you about the calorie intake even while sleeping.

Once you know the estimated calories burned, you can lose weight accordingly. But your weight loss depends upon your effort, age, sex, body mass, and calories burned. Males and females have different metabolic rates, meaning their calorie burn and weight loss differ.

Tips To Burn More Calories With Pickleball

  • Here are some tips that will help you burn more calories with pickleball.
  • Well, to burn more calories, you need to play for a longer period. Make your routine and put extra effort into burning more calories.
  • Increase your time if you are playing for 30 minutes, then extend your time to an hour. Extending your time will help you burn calories quickly.
  • Also, you can use a witness tracker, which will constantly help you know your calorie burn. It will also motivate you to play for longer to burn additional calories.
  • Play intense matches as more effort will reduce your weight and will burn your calories instantly.

Pickleball Health Benefits

Well, playing pickleball has numerous kinds of benefits for your health. Playing pickleball promotes cardiovascular health, which includes hypertension, heart attack, and stroke. Other than that, it provides energy to your muscles and joints, which reduces orthopedic problems.

Also, it impacts less stress on your joints too. Pickleball reduces depression by releasing hormones like bioamines and endorphins, which regulate mood. Another benefit of playing pickleball is that it provides a healthy connection with people, which helps you feel better (physically and mentally). Last but not least, it improves blood regulation, which prevents many health problems.

Calories Burned Pickleball Vs Tennis

Tennis is another important sport that helps in burning body calories. It also involves a body workout, which regulates the blood and burns all the body’s calories. To know which sports burn more calories, pickleball or tennis, my answer would be Pickleball. Pickleball involves more body movements, which burns calories quickly compared to tennis.

  • In Pickleball, a player burns roughly .08 calories per minute per pound of body weight.
  • In Tennis, a player burns roughly 0.056 calories per minute per pound of body weight.

Tennis also burns calories, but only on a large ground. Larger ground helps you cover more distance, so you put in more effort and lose calories quickly.

Mental Benefits Of Pickleball

Pickleball has various mental benefits on individual health. It aids in socialization, which allows people to communicate with different people, make new friends, and improve social relations. Sometimes, a good connection leads to honest friendship, which frees your mind from all worries and hardships. Secondly, it helps to improve the self-esteem of an individual.

People learn new skills from other people, which improves their gaming sessions and helps them to win the game easily. Winning the game boosts the individual’s confidence and self-esteem, which results in positive reactions and promotes good mental health.

Another important thing is that it helps people feel young as it reduces joint problems and other cardiovascular diseases. Also, playing pickleball combats depression, which relaxes your mind and makes you feel better. Throughout the game, people remain under mental challenge as they use different strategies to win it.

So, they remain involved in the game and forget about all their worries. Also, it is the best activity to reduce boredom as you can engage yourself in good activity, which will help you generate positive thoughts.

What drives your total is active rally time, so longer rallies mean more movement per hour — one more reason the patient dinking strategies that extend exchanges pay off. If you want a session that behaves more like a workout, fill the gaps between games with the short, purposeful work in our pickleball drills instead of standing at the fence.

Conclusion

Now you know how many calories you burn playing pickleball and how much it benefits human health and fitness. If you also tire of losing weight through diet, gym, or workout, you should try playing pickleball for a quick calorie burn.

Live a healthy and good life by playing pickleball to maintain your body weight and prevent weight gain. A healthy man remains active instead of feeling lazy all the time. Now, play pickleball daily to reach the highest level of body fitness.

September 7, 2026 by Jeena Noven

Warmup Exercises For Pickleball

These 4 are the most effective stretches and warmup exercises for pickleball that you can do to decrease soreness in muscles and injury.

If you are a sports person, mainly a pickleball player, you must know the importance of the best effective stretches and warmup exercises for pickleball. Warm-up, when done regularly before playing pickleball, increases the body temperature, ultimately increasing the blood flow. This creates energy that decreases the chances of getting injured after you play the match.

As a pickleball player, I love to do specific basic warmup exercises and effective stretches for pickleball players every time I play the game. This will help you do the best exercise before the match to get the best possible performance. Let us start the guide, and let me explain these important pickleball stretches and warmup exercises for the pickleball game.

Effective Stretches & Warm-Up Exercises For Pickleball

The following 4 are the most reliable pickleball warm-up stretches and warmup exercises that you can perform before starting the game and can decrease the chances of getting soreness in the muscles or injury after the game. There are several exercises, from balance exercises for pickleball to dynamic stretching to pickleball warmup drills, but I will talk specifically about four basic ones.

1. Wrist And Ankle Circles – Leg Warmups

Since pickleball is a game of movements of arms and legs, you have to pay special attention to activating wrist and ankle muscles before starting the game. Before starting the match, you must perform proper wrist and ankle circles to avoid any ankle or wrist injury.

Rotate them clockwise and counterclockwise by setting a specific number of rotations. This means if you rotate your wrist five times clockwise, wait for 5 seconds, and rotate five times in an anticlockwise direction. Do the same with your foot.

Rotate the ankle five times in the clockwise direction, wait for 5 seconds, and then rotate the anticlockwise five times. They activate the muscles of your wrist and ankle, making them fresh and ready for the pickleball game.

2. Arm Circles

Doing arm circles is another important physical warmup exercise before starting the pickleball game. This is the easiest pickleball elbow exercise but the most effective. What you have to do is to hold your arms to the sides of your body.

Please stay in the same position for 2 to 3 seconds, then move them in small circles. Make sure the circles you are making are moving in the right direction. Slightly increase the speed and size of the circles until you are easy with your arm. Do it continuously for 30 seconds, stop, and then restart. Do the same in the backward position.

3. Jogging

Jogging is one of the best and most effective types of warmup exercise to increase your body’s mobility and flexibility. Although it is a basic warmup exercise, doing a few rounds across the court makes a great difference. They increase your blood circulation and make it easier to enhance your body’s blood flow.

Start with jogging first and then add a couple of movements, like a back-kick, as we advance and go backward, speeding up the movement. Ensure you are not flipping over your feet and not jogging inconsistently. Make sure to start jogging slowly and then increase the speed at the start, similarly decreasing your speed at the end and then stopping at the end.

4. Hamstring Kicks

Hamstring kicks or Hamstring stretches are known as Frankensteins. Hamstring warmups are one of the basic and most effective stretches that enhance the hamstring flexibility flow. You must walk from side to side by kicking and keeping one leg up at a time. While staying in the same pose, try to touch your toes. Always remember that if proper touching is impossible, go as far as possible without forceful movement or strenuous physical effort.

5. Lungs

Lunges are a beneficial exercise for pickleball players, as they help to enhance leg strength, balance, and flexibility, which are crucial for the quick movements and agility required in pickleball. It’s always a good idea to start with a few repetitions and gradually increase your strength and endurance. Lung exercises include forward lunges, lateral lunges, reverse lunges, walking lunges, and twisting lunges.

6. Butt Kickers And High Knees

Butt Kickers and High Knees are dynamic exercises commonly used in warm-ups in pickleball. They’re great for increasing stability, improving flexibility, and strengthening the gluteal muscles for quick movements. Begin by standing straight, then lift your right foot at a 45-degree angle. Bend at the hips, touching the floor behind with your left hand, keeping your feet together. Repeat this 10 times, then switch to the left side. For High Knees, stand upright and jog in place, lifting your knees as high as possible toward your chest.

People Also Ask

Why Is It Important To Warm Up Before Pickleball?

Warming up is the movement of your body that involves an increase in the blood flow, ultimately increasing the temperature and making you feel more energetic and fresh. Warmup games communicate that the body is now going to work more. This increases the heart rate and delivers more oxygen to your body cells and muscles, making it more flexible and better when facing quick and fast movements.

What Are Some Of The Basic Exercises You Often Do Before Playing Pickleball?

Doing wrist and ankle circles, arm circles, slight jogging, the sumo stretch, and torso twists are the most important types of basic exercises that you can do before playing the pickleball game. These steps involve basic movements that ultimately enhance your body’s blood flow and blood circulation. They are easy to learn and perform, making them the most common and reliable for warming your body before the game.

Should You Stretch Before Playing Pickleball?

Yes, doing warmup exercises and stretching before the pickleball game is very important to follow if you are a pickleball player. It initiates a good blood flow and increases the heartbeat, ultimately increasing your energy and refreshing you to start the game. Dynamic stretching for pickleball stretching involves muscle stretching to make it ready for the game.

What Are Good Warm-Up Exercises?

Here are some good warm-up exercises for preparing yourself before pickleball: active stretching, pre-workout stretch, cooling down, arm circles, jumping jack, leg swing stretch, high knees, shoulder rolls, walking lunges, bodyweight squats, push-ups, hip circles, and leg stretches.

After the Last Point: The Static Stretches This Guide Skips

Everything above belongs before the first serve — stretches that raise your temperature before a match or a session of drills. The stretches to hold belong at the other end. When the point ends, spend five minutes on stretches for the muscles pickleball shortens: calves against a fence, a straight leg up on a bench for the hamstrings, and the serving shoulder pulled across the chest. Hold each for thirty seconds, without bouncing. It is the half of the routine our warm-ups and cool-downs guide pairs with the start — and it decides how stiff you feel tomorrow.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, you have gone through the details mentioned in the above-written guide about the basic and the most effective stretches and warmup exercises. Before starting the pickleball game, I have elaborated on the best warmup moves you can perform. Remember to learn these pickleball warm up exercises while staying focused and perform them with your key attention and concentration to get the most out of them.

Preparing for the pickleball game before the game starts is more important than playing the game. This prepares your body, mind, and muscles to work exactly the way they need during the game. So make sure to learn the details mentioned above with all your attention to know what kind of basic and effective stretches and warmup exercises you must perform before starting the game.
