Outdoor pickleball courts in Phoenix, Arizona

There are numerous places to play pickleball across the Phoenix metro, including public parks, community centers, and dedicated indoor pickleball clubs in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, and Glendale.

Most outdoor city park courts are free, while destination facilities like Arizona Athletic Grounds’ 41-court complex charge for booked play. In summer, play shifts to sunrise and to lighted courts after dark.

How to Read This List: Dedicated Courts, Tennis Overlays and Desert Heat

Entries marked “Permanent Lines, Nets” are dedicated pickleball courts that play exactly to the official net height, while “Tennis Nets” entries are pickleball lines on shared courts, a setup covered in our guide to playing pickleball on a tennis court.

Almost every large outdoor venue in the Valley is lighted, because summer play happens early in the morning and after sunset. City of Phoenix courts open at 5:30 a.m., and Tempe Sports Complex runs extended summer hours of 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

From roughly October through April, winter visitors swell the Valley’s open-play queues, and the big dedicated parks run paddle-rotation systems at busy times. This is also tournament season, when the PPA Tour’s Carvana Mesa Cup comes to Arizona Athletic Grounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Phoenix pickleball courts free?

Most outdoor city park courts are free across the metro. Phoenix’s park courts (Pecos, Paseo Highlands, Herberger, Encanto, Rose Mofford and more), Scottsdale’s park courts (Horizon, Cholla, Ashler Hills, Thompson Peak), Tempe Sports Complex, and Chandler’s courts all cost nothing to play on, first-come first-served.

You pay at the indoor clubs (Pickleball Kingdom, Center Court, The Pickleball Space, Dink & Dine), for court rentals at Mesa Tennis & Pickleball Center, and a small pass fee for City of Phoenix recreation center gym sessions ($2 day pass for adults).

What is the difference between dedicated courts and tennis overlays?

Dedicated courts — most of this list, marked “Permanent Lines, Nets” — were built or fully converted for pickleball, with permanent pickleball lines and a regulation-height net.

Overlay or dual-use courts paint pickleball lines onto a shared tennis or basketball court: Desert Foothills Park’s 2 courts are listed by the City of Phoenix as “dual use,” and Thompson Peak Park adds overflow games with portable nets on its basketball courts.

Overlays play fine for casual games, but the net and surface are shared with the other sport.

Where should beginners play in Phoenix?

Start where drop-in is free and busy: Pecos Park, Horizon Park and Tempe Sports Complex all run first-come open play with plenty of courts.

For a first lesson, The Pickleball Space in Glendale offers a free introductory class, Kiwanis Recreation Center in Tempe provides nets, balls and paddles at its indoor drop-in sessions, and Mesa Tennis & Pickleball Center and Scottsdale Community College both run instruction programs.

How do people play pickleball in the Phoenix summer heat?

They play at the edges of the day and indoors. Outdoor courts open as early as 5:30 a.m. (5 a.m. at Tempe Sports Complex in summer), and lighted courts run to 10 or 11 p.m. for evening games.

Midday summer play moves inside to air-conditioned clubs like Pickleball Kingdom, Center Court and The Pickleball Space, or onto Dink & Dine’s covered, misted outdoor courts. Bring more water than you think you need, and expect outdoor open play to be busiest at sunrise.

Can I rent paddles or equipment?

Yes, at the clubs. Pickleball Kingdom in Chandler rents paddles and balls, Dink & Dine has paddles available on site, and Kiwanis Recreation Center provides nets, balls and paddles for its drop-in sessions at no extra step.

At the public park courts, bring your own gear — Scottsdale’s park courts, for example, are bring-your-own-paddles-and-balls.
