Austin’s pickleball scene starts with the city itself: the Parks and Recreation Department lists 34 official pickleball locations — 22 park court sites and 12 recreation centers. On top of that sit two 16-court indoor clubs and a members-only rooftop club downtown.
Texas heat runs the schedule: Austin summers regularly top 100°F, so regulars play early or after sunset on courts lit until 10 p.m., or move indoors. The scene has history, too: Dreamland, Major League Pickleball’s Dripping Springs birthplace, closed permanently on December 31, 2024.
How to Read This List: Dedicated Courts, Multi-Sport Nets and Texas Heat
Austin’s public courts come in three setups, and the Facilities line tells you which one you are getting. “Permanent Lines, Nets” means a dedicated pickleball court with its own net.
Most Austin park courts are actually multi-purpose courts striped for pickleball, so those entries read “Permanent Lines, Multi-Sport Net System”: the court carries an adjustable net system shared with other sports rather than a fixed pickleball net.
A few striped courts have no net at all, and those entries say so. The one true tennis overlay on the list, Onion Creek Club, reads “Permanent Lines, Tennis Nets” — a setup covered in our guide to playing pickleball on a tennis court.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are there free pickleball courts in Austin?
Yes — most of this list is free. Every City of Austin park court here is free and first come, first served, and the city recreation centers run drop-in open play with no fee listed.
The one city venue that charges is the Austin Tennis & Pickleball Center, at $5 per person with a reservation. The private clubs and the suburban recreation centers charge memberships, day passes or drop-in fees.
What is the difference between dedicated courts and overlays in Austin?
Dedicated courts (marked “Permanent Lines, Nets”) are built for pickleball, with their own lines and a net at the official height — 36 inches at the posts, 34 in the middle.
Most Austin park courts are a middle category: multi-purpose courts striped for pickleball with an adjustable multi-sport net system, which play close to regulation once the net is set.
True tennis overlays keep the higher tennis net — Onion Creek Club is the example on this list. A few striped courts (Rosewood’s multi-purpose court, for one) have no net at all, so check the Facilities line before you go.
Where should a beginner play in Austin?
Start where the games and the gear are provided. Parque Zaragoza Recreation Center lends paddles, balls and nets free from the front desk and runs free beginner classes; Dottie Jordan Recreation Center checks out equipment for its Thursday sessions.
Austin Pickle Ranch’s $10 Greenhorn class includes a rental paddle and a group lesson, Pickleland and The Picklr Austin West both run free intro classes, and the Austin Tennis & Pickleball Center runs “Newbie” open-play sessions.
Any city rec-center open play will rotate a new player into games.
How do Austin players deal with the Texas heat?
They play around it. Outdoor regulars go early in the morning or in the evening — many city courts are lit until 10 p.m., including Dick Nichols, Little Zilker, Rosewood and Pan American.
Midday play moves indoors to air-conditioned gyms at the city recreation centers or to the climate-controlled clubs (Austin Pickle Ranch, Apex, The Picklr Austin West and Pickleland all run play through the hottest hours).
Bring more water than you think you need; summer afternoons on an unshaded court are no place to test that.
Can I rent or borrow a paddle in Austin?
Yes. Parque Zaragoza Recreation Center lends paddles, balls and nets free from its front desk, and Dottie Jordan Recreation Center checks out equipment during its pickleball sessions.
At the paid venues, Austin Pickle Ranch’s intro class includes a rental paddle, Bouldin Acres offers paddle rentals with its court rentals, and Pickleland’s free intro class is set up for players who do not own a paddle yet.
The pro shops at the Austin Tennis & Pickleball Center, The Picklr and Apex sell paddles on site.
